Nine Sols PS5 Review – One of the Best Games of 2024 You Are NOT Playing

Red Candle Games has released one of the best platforming games of the year with Nine Sols. Though it somewhat flew under the radar at launch, it’s since built-up momentum and launched for consoles.

Part side-scrolling action game, part Sekiro-like parry-heavy title, Nine Sols balances challenging combat with excellent environmental design, organic exploration, and incredible boss battles. The story revolves around Yi, a warrior seeking revenge after the Tiandao Council leaves him for dead. It’s a task that’s easier said than done, especially with all the powerful threats in New Kunlun.

The hand-drawn visuals and animation are a delight to witness, accompanied by a stellar soundtrack and presentation, resulting in a gameplay experience that’s as punishing as sublime. Despite the punishing nature of combat and how some environments feel deceptively large, Nine Sols is a simply stellar title that you shouldn’t miss.

  1. From what I know, Red Candle Games was under a lot of fire from Chinese people due to one of their previous games, Devotion, because there was a poster in the game depicting Xi Jinping as Winnie the Pooh. There was so much hate that the game is no longer on Steam and only the soundtrack remains. I just wanted to mention this as this could have influenced the game's popularity. This also could've been a big reason as to why it wasn't on Game Awards. Honestly, it wouldn't be surprising as Game awards is kinda BS. Take what I said with a grain of salt as there is no hard evidence.

  2. Just started playing a day ago and I’m loving it. It is frustratingly difficult at times but I know when it’s my error. It feels really good to do well in this game, and there’s so much to each area I’ve been to so far. The artstyle is so pleasing too!

  4. Bought this the other night on steam. Played it for the first time today for nearly 2 hours. It's incredible everything about it's incredible. The level design the music, the story, the gameplay the gameplay loop the Parry not that difficult to do If you mess up you still get credit, The enemy design the game is so good. This is my game of the Year 2024 all day. I also picked up metaphor last night and I haven't played that yet so that might also be in that conversation. Completely different game though.
