Hosting open raids is a powerful recruiting tool before the days of forum and discord recruiting. I was able to host weekly MC raids as a pug (no group or raid finders) and used those raids to poach players to fill burnout slots in later tier raids. 25-man, 10 man raid and group finder ruined wow communities forever. And then layers, let's not even go there.
