  1. Crazy how the rules and all that stuff are softer now, but the core players lasted longer. Jerry Rice played 20 years at WR in an era there was no helmet to helmet penalty. Seems like these guys now don’t last as long.

  2. Kickoff is dangerous. You have fringe players trying to make a name for themselves. Running full speed and colliding with other humans. Then the returner is running full speed with more than likely bigger dudes running full speed to tackle them. Kickoff can never really be safe.

  3. What part of football isn’t ruined? What’s catch? What’s roughing the passer? What’s targeting? What’s pass interference? What’s forward progress? What’s offsides? What’s false start? What’s a qb sneak? Literally not an aspect of the game is in a fixed state right now….

  4. The NFL has been trying to kill the kickoff and special teams in general for over a decade. They don’t want to do it too rapidly to anger the fan base, they’re doing it slowly and gradually. This offseason will mark the end of the kickoff. Extra points are next.

  5. What about something like a 4th and 15 or 20 from your own 20-30 yard line and you punt it away?

Punt returns are generally more exciting than kickoff returns. Way fewer injuries in punt returns than kickoff returns. And there’s a built-in “onside kick” option by trotting the offense instead and trying to convert a first down. Also throw in that you always could have a fake punt at any time (like surprise onside kicks).

  6. This is an easy fix. Just rewind the rules back to where the used to be. If someone wants to complain about injuries……..IT'S FOOTBALL. It's so funny that such a tough sport keeps softening itself up. Anyone playing knows they might get hurt. If you are not okay with that, don't play.

  7. Referees do what they're paid to do.
They have specific instructions from above. And if they weren't following those intructions, they wouldn't still have a job.
Just like you and I, if you work for somebody, and don't follow the instructions from above you, you will be out of job. Same with referees.

  8. My idea, if the ball is in the playable field (not touchdown areas) you can FC but the ball will be spotted at the 15 yard line. If it’s in the TD area then you can take the FC but for the 25 yard line. Incentives returns if playable and also stop kickers from booming it because then the spot is the 25 yard line.

  9. Say what you want about the XFL kickoff. But as far as like having an exciting play and still keeping players " safe ". It is by far the best remedy. Cuts down massive collisions but still leaves room for an exciting play to happen. NFL needs to swallow its pride (because it's not like they've never stolen anything from the XFL before) and adopt how they do kick offs.

  10. A good possible solution to the kickoff problem: Change how the play goes.
Line up like you would have years ago, have the kick off be from the 20 yard line, players on opposite teams have to be 10 yards apart minimum, etc buuuuuut no one can move other than the kicker & the receiver until AFTER the ball is caught?
Sounds kinda stupid for the plays where nothing happens or there's a touchback, but it WOULD make returns be interesting & less dangerous in terms of impacts because the only one that might have a running headstart is the returner if the kick is short. It would change on-side kicks a lot as well if no one could start going until the ball hits the ground or someone, so that's something that would have to be considered as well, designating a thing specifically for on side kicks.
    Just an idea

  11. -No tackles/blocks on players without the ball on kick off both offense & Defence. (reduce qty of collisions)
-Receiving players can be anywhere between endzone and 40 (more targets to dodge for defence slowing speed of collision)
-if kicker kicks out of bounds on the full play starts on 50 if it bounces out the play starts where ball went out (incentives for good kicks and catching)
-kicking team players start on 50. (reduce the gap and speed of impact)

  12. What happens if you penalize kick-offs that go out of the back of the end zone the same way as if it was kicked out of bounds. This way the kicker has to try to kick the ball short enough to not go out of the end zone and long enough to prevent giving up good starting field position for free. You could in conjunction change the penalty for kicking out of bounds to let the offense start on the 35 instead of the 40 so that you are not always giving up so much.

Plus this makes taking a 15 yd penalty on the kick off much more interesting.
