  1. This game is so addicting. The crates give you a free item after the wave. Also try out Ranger and just build ranged damage with a mix of fast and hard hitting guns. It gets crazy.

  2. I have played/own Vampire Survivors, Bounty of One, Boneraiser Minions, 20 minutes Till Dawn and Brotato. I also have Spellbook Demonslayers Prologue and Soulstone Survivors Prologue. I would say I have played a nice chunk of the genre. The one's I have not played or own I have probably seen youtube content about them.
I have a lot to say about the genre. Not sure if anyone is interested. But Haelian did ask in a round about way.

Let's start with the big boy elephant in the room. The pricing is awkward. I think most folks including myself are happy to get 1 hour of entertainment out of a game for every 1$ spent. Everything after that is bonus value and a testament to how enjoyable a game is. But this genre makes me rethink this entirely. Despite having unlockables and meta progress they play out more like a single player story mode game rather than a game that is suppose to have replay ability. For example, if you play the fist guy in Brotato and win how many more runs are you going to go on with the fist guy? The honeymoon phase in these games are really strong but the urge to want to keep playing them is abysmal.

They try to squeeze out replay ability by throwing in rng mechanics like rarity of stat upgrades. Bounty of One and Soulstone Survivors have the most egregious versions of this system. Making it so you may have to play multiple runs with a class or whatever kind of starting gimmick. And it's really a "youtuber" way of looking at and playing a game right? Showcase a starting gimmick and complete the run. Every person who plays 20 Minutes Till Dawn isn't going to try and beat the game on darkness 15 with Scarlett using each and every gun. Heck, most youtubers won't do that kind of content. In fact for most of these games once you have won 4-5 runs no matter the gimmick the honeymoon is over.

The whole system almost feels like a scam. They are priced fairly cheap and designed to hold your attention somewhere between 2 and 8 hours. About a whole days worth of playing. Long enough you can't refund them. But if you hold to the average way a person views entertainment per hour as mentioned above these look like fair investments. I know scam can be a strong word and when you look up reviews for these games there are a nice chunk of folks with 30+ hours on any given one. It's a very strange genre.

There are scary trends going around that this genre is also implementing. A free demo that usually gets regular updates. There is usually a special version youtubers have access to that has more content than the demo even. Especially true when the game is close to early access. After early access updates are far less often if at all. We really need some sort of standards to judge these things by other than price point. I think we should start demanding roadmaps at the very least day one of early access. Youtubers need to be more review heavy and critical instead of the jolly lets play attitude. Can't say the last time I heard a youtuber say "This sucks and I/we will not be playing it again." or "This isn't very good but if you like the genre just play X and Y or check out my videos on X and Y." It's like we are getting nickle and dimed ala mobile games except instead of micro transactions in a single game we are being bombarded with many small crappy "full price" games. I know I am coming off a bit conspiratorial. But I ain't wrong. Something needs to change in the consumers favor.

I predict Brotato will be the last semi successful release of this genre unless something comes a long to change things up greatly. More will come with positive reviews, sure. But there are going to be less and less buyers of these going forward. I think by the end of 2023 we will see less direct clones coming out. But the shady business practices happening with cheap roguelikes are going to grow. Probably come to a head at some point. Good drama content for those that do not partake. But def much further down the road.

  3. Devs gotta stop this "early access" nonsense. The game is out. You can pay for it and play it. This concept of "early access" to me is an excuse for poor quality. v1.0 for games isn't an "official release", it's simply the next update since the game was released to the public.

  4. I pretty much played most the games in the genre myself. I still enjoy watching them, some more than others. This and Rogue Genesia stands out IMO. Keep em coming. But I do understand the concern from a streamer perspective and sustainability.
