New World Spear Issues & How To Solve Them!

The Spear in New World is a super fun weapon, especially in PvE. Unfortunately, it has some issues.

In today’s video, we’re talking about the current issues of the spear, primarily in PvP. These revolve around telegraphed/slow abilities, slow weapon tracking and a lack of forward momentum on attacks. I suggest some simple spear buffs that would help the weapons on higher levels of play without massively buffing it on lower levels of play, where it performs quite well.

  1. I just take the spear for what it is and that is primarily a defensive/stand my ground weapon. I accept it terrible for chasing people so my secondary is going to be focused on speed and chasing

  2. I really enjoyed the spear too but all the problems you bring up are 100% correct, also the coup de grace issue , sometimes sweep knocks down people too far away and you can land coup de grace on them, so I feel like increasing the lunge range on that too would be good. If they fix the spear I would love to main it.

  3. While I do think the issues you raise are definitely valid ones, many of them are part of what makes Speak such a skill-based class, and I am not sure I would want that to change. Many if not most of them can be mitigated through build-chose and playstyle/tactics, and while it may not be the best general PvP choice due to some of these issue, it is the best for some specific roles and use-cases, and while your recommendations would not change that, it might make it more accessible to the average player, which opens up the possibility of less positive changes down the road.

One thing you point out as an issue I actually see as a feature, the lesser amount of forward movement on attacks as compared to other weapons – this can be seen as a pro versus a con, since it allows you to still deal your damage yet maintain more distance than would otherwise be the case, as would be expected for a spear. Combined with some of the available passives and spear-specific Perks, this allows for a certain mobility-based style of play, especially when paired with something like Bow. It may not be ideal that successful high-level PvP requires such a narrow range of tactics, powers and paired weapon choices, but again I feel it is part of what makes Spear so enjoyable; it is challenging and when successful, very rewarding.

  4. In the closed beta I played, Spear/Rapier just to see if I could make it work. The rapier charge made a lot of difference as did taking the talent for dodges to reduce spear CDs, found I had to get good at dodging into enemies for positioning, but negating a players CC & then CC'ing them felt great.

  5. The trick is to constantly side dodgeroll and attack from flanks so your opponent doesn't get the opportunity to dodge sidewards. I'd recommend light armor because of that.

  6. Spear is fine. Not every weapon needs to be GA or GH.

Like many others, I have never had any problems landing spear abilities–even with double melee (works well with hatchet); it's just a matter of grasp and playstyle. The points you make about opponents dodging or side-stepping spear attacks implies that spear users are unable to out-skill their opponents in the same manner. A well-timed dodge or side-step is the best way to land a Sweep or Vault Kick that sets up a CC chain and CD reduction overload.

Also, Skewer is probably one of the worst PVP abilities because it is slow and roots you in place. So, yes, this is very easy to dodge. Additionally, all spear attacks can cleave, meaning that you can Sweep (obviously),Vault Kick, and Javelin multiple targets in close range. And since CD reduction perks proc per target hit, this also results in a nearly instant cooldown reset to all abilities when landing VK hits on 2+ targets (assuming you take the 30% CD reduction perk).

Spear is a higher skill-cap weapon than most, but yes, it is also somewhat niche and strongest when paired with a ranged weapon. I don't see this as a problem, though, as it is primarily a dex weapon anyways.

  7. I used the spear in combo with the gaxe quite a bit and for me personally it was specifically a utility tool for CC, to lay the beats with the Gaxe but I would not be opposed to making it more streamlined across the board.

  8. Sweep (no coup de grace) > vault kick > javelin. This is the only viable PvP 1v1 combo imo. After that combo switch weapons, dont bother with basic spear attacks, waste of time.

  9. What's the best melee weapon to combine with spear as your main weapon in PvP? I know its not really good but I still want to try it. The biggest problem is catching up to ranged players. Not sure which one of SnS, Rapier and Hatchet helps with that the most. What's your experience on that?

  10. not sure if I can agree on this it sounds just like u picked the wrong skills and build for the char ive been very successful as spear, here we see the classic im gonna attempt to hit you till one of us die rqther then disengageing the opponent and using the cc thats build into the build, etc pair it with a bow to deal with these people or simply get abit of a gap and jav vault kick and sweep etc endless posibilties myself im fan of sweep jav kick but ye if u get outplayed u get outplayed just how life is.

  11. I agree 100%. One ability you forgot to mention was cyclone. Trash skill that gets you killed. Animation is so slow, recovery time is atrocious. Spear needs buffs. The basic attack buffs you mentioned would make the passives better, since there are a lot of passives affecting light/heavy attacks.

  12. The highest damage of spears is perforate. But the only best way to use that after enemy knockdown with sweeping. If use after vault kick its useless, enemy will dodge after the first hit.

They should make the vault kick to GRIT. That more useful than increase damage below enemy% health, since vault kick has no damage at all. Stun also less impact because enemy will wake up after first hit. Its very hard to combo using vault kick if you dont take skewer.

I agree with you sweeping skill range is too short, because TONDO rapier skill more further but the weapon is short.

Ultimate skill of zoner also stupid. how possible we need to keep the stamina when pvp. This game is about block and dodge, and it use stamina. We dont use stamina, we die. 25% damage when full stamina is joke.

  13. I think you said it accurately @ 9:33. The spear is a niche weapon best combined with a ranged weapon.

That said, it excels at that. I appreciate your criticism, but the spear is so strong at the things it does provide that "niche" (which isn't hugely small) that if you made it more powerful in other respects to compete with Greataxe and Greathammer as a bread and butter melee weapon, it'd be overpowered when combined as a weapon that bow/musket players use to punish pushers.

Then they'd need to nerf those components of it, robbing it of its unique identity.

I'd rather them add more weapons to fill more niches than make every weapon balanced around a similar playstyle.

  14. I love the spear! Would be fun if light/heavy attacks crit on heads. This video explained really well why I was struggling with this weapon against some players.
The advantage of the spear is supposed to be its range. You look for an opening, thrust annd go back into a safe distance.
Since it's hard to hit, chase other players in NW, I'll use the spear to create distance and max out stamina regen. Watch out for my arrows and javelins!

  15. Honestly I think its user error and it sounds to me that you clearly want to main the weapon but you dont want to adapt the playstyle that is necessary to be used for this weapon. Like others said its not the main star of a build rather a supportiv high damage weapon. You need to set up ccs to get the spear going and I think thats ok because it makes it a high damage weapon. In our company we have a good ammount of light armor bow/spear players and they never complained about it.

Spear wasnt desgined to chase someone rather to stand your ground when someone approaches you thats why the movement of a spear is so "limited" because you can reach further and still stay rather at a "safeish" distance.

Game isnt even out yet and people are still adjusting lets wait for launch day play for a few weeks and then judge on what is "bad" and what is "good"
