New World – Day 1 – Wait Queue, New Servers, Steam Hate, RECAP

Amazon’s Long awaited, and slightly delayed, MMORPG has finally arrived! Today’s the day, and let’s do a recap.

First off, the game is selling HUGE numbers. No count yet, there were over 700,000 people logged on simultaneously – an impressive number, and one that lead to a few problems.

First and foremost is waiting times / queue to play the game. Right at launch there were queues in the thousands tens of thousands (screen shots are going around) however I did not experience that myself.

There were initially only 233 servers per Kotaku and with 2,000 being the cap per server – well, there was space for 466,000 players – which is a lot less than the 700,000 concurrent at peak time. Ya, that’s right, nearly a QUARTER MILLION players were unable to find homes / had to wait in the early hours.

As you can expect, players went bonkers on the steam reviews and started trashing the game for the launch issues. I think Amazon could have done a better job with this (how do you manage expectations for a launch of this magnitude)? but I also think there was a bit too much venom on gamers parts.

I will note that I had just logged on and there were a host of new servers made available on US West (where I play)
and I assume many more were made available in the other zones as well. Pleaes comment below if you can yay or nay
that 🙂

Amazon also promises that players will be able to switch servers for free over the next two weeks,
a service for which other online games often charge a small fee.

How was your expeirence with the launch? Did you see more servers go up? Where are you playing? Comment below
let’s even game together!
