New Toyota Land Cruiser vs Defender, G-Class & Grenadier

When the going gets tough, who’s toughest?

That’s the question Top Gear set out to answer when we sent the new Toyota Land Cruiser off into the Welsh wilderness together with the facelifted Mercedes G-class, the latest Land Rover Defender, and the 4×4 that apes ye olde Defender, the Ineos Grenadier.

We sent these four 4x4s clambering over rocks, wading through rivers, and generally doing the sort of stuff they’re designed for but never actually do in the hands of most buyers.

Which clawed its way out of the mud ahead of its rivals? Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage and Tom Ford are your referees…

  1. Here in South AFRICA We have a very old expression in the 4×4 fraternity/ and that is the following namely; "… the most important nut on any 4×4 vehicle, is the nut behind the steering wheel…". And in this vid it was evidently proven correct with the driver of the Defender not being able to get out of the "bomb Hole.
You can have all the tech in the world available and the driver is a 'nut' then the best machine available can be real rubbish

  2. I’m a massive fan of Landcruisers, I’ve had 4, but to be fair to the Grenadier, the steering system is more agricultural because it’s tougher and more off road focused than all of the others, this means there will always be compromises on road, great test Gents.👍

  3. That Toyota is ugly, boring and slow. Nobody over here buys the Toyota. Nobody cross shops that Land Cruiser with a new G. The G usually is the car that people want. The Defender is also high upon that list.

  4. I find this whole thing a bit ridiculous. Saying the G is less good an offroad since it is to expensive and preferring the Toyota because of that reason while nobody will buy that Toyota new for serious off-roading since it is to expensive and the old stuff is way better.

  5. Tell me you don’t know what you’re doing off-road without telling me you don’t know what you’re doing off-road:

Let’s put the defender at the tallest setting and then be surprised that there’s no wheel articulation. 🙄

  6. More cars should have overhead button consoles like the Grenadier. Manufacturers really should tap into our childish need to feel like we're piloting the Millennium Falcon or a 747 rather than driving round a tesco car park.

  7. Wouldn’t buy the Ineos. I couldn’t knowingly give money to that hypocrite Ratcliffe. Pro Brexit, saying it’s great for Britain, and then builds them overseas😂😂😂

  8. My 2012 Range Rover Sport has done the Strata Florida without a single issue. Bomb hole dealt with with no problems at all. I've seen the Strata done on winter road tyres fitted to another Range Rover Sport. The filming of the Defender in the Bomb Hole was obviously done with an outcome in mind. Oh, and the Defender 110 and 130 have exactly the same wheelbase. The 130 just has a longer rear overhang. Such poor journalism. Shame the Top Gear name – once well known for informative car reviews (before Clarkson et al took over) – is reduced to this travesty.
