NEW MUTANTS DOUBLE FEATURE! -Art Adams’ SPECIAL EDITION V. Rob Liefeld’s FINAL ISSUE!

Is it fair to compare New Mutants Special Edition 1 illustrated by Art Adams to the final issue of New Mutants 100 illustrated by Rob Liefeld? Probably not. Please join me as I do just that. Two important comics by two prolific comic legends.

  1. Loved Art…I was looking at the “Asgardian Wars” graphic novel on Saturday! Pretty cool you posted about a couple of days later. To me – Art Adams and Alan Davis are the artist that I wanted so much more of in the late 80s and early 90s. Btw, if you want some good Alan Davis from present day, check out the Thanos trilogy by Jim Starlin and Alan Davis that came out a couple of years ago.

Leifeld – was never a fan.

  2. Art Adams' work on X-Men specials and annuals can't be praised enough. I have all the individual parts of this Asgard story, but I should buy the collected trade just as an excuse to read it all again.

Mohawk Storm is my favorite Storm look. She's equal parts gorgeous and fierce. Maybe it's also because Claremont increased the spotlight on her during her mohawk years, after Scott left, which caused her to be my favorite X-Man.

I wasn't aware of the Gumby connection. When I read this originally, I just thought Art was having fun. Thanks for the background on that.

Rob Liefeld…….the introduction of Cable shook things up and added new excitement to the book. And his style is okay in small doses (meaning, there was no need for 80% of Marvel books to mimic the style in the 90's). When you compare his story to something written by Claremont and drawn by Art Adams though…..wow…..the weaknesses in Liefeld's work become more striking.

  3. I see that nod to John Byrne 50 years cap on New Mutants #100. Heehee. I will not mention what I think of Liefeld art. Art Adams and George Perez can fill a panel and make it work. Did I say I'm not going to mention anything about Liefeld right? Adam's Micronauts is one of his first books I purchased off the rack. Great work.

  4. I was working through the NM Omnibus, and I ran across Art Adams work there. It was way to early for Liefeld, but it so reminded me of Liefeld's work – only MUCH better (and not so silly). So I began to investigate this Art Adams – come to find out Liefeld was imitating him. Sure Adams uses crosshatching and draws tooth grins with 80s neo-punk hairdos. But Liefeld has no sense of restraint about him. He just seems to think – if it is good, then more is better, and much more is fabulous.

And that is how I ended up here at this video.
