  1. Evil's corruption is a theme in LotR. Orcs are dead elves, the riders (Nazgûl) were men once, the ring corrupts any who are near it (other than Tom Bombadil).

Tolkien dispised allegory, and made open criticism of his good friend and fellow author CS Lewis. "The big lion is Jesus" is something Tolkien disliked, because then there's the expectation for the lion to be perfect as Jesus is perfect. Rather, Tolkien's perspective was that all the greatest art drew from the "True Myth" which is the gospel. So he, conscious of this, had many christ like attributes and elements, but did not have one character illustrate Christ. For a few examples…
Gandalf rose from the dead, now wearing white robes
Aragorn is the long awaited king, long been prophesied and anticipated
In the book, Tom Bombadil describes himself as the "eldest one", "older than the first drop of dew", lives in a peaceful garden (Eden) and the ring has no effect on him in power nor temptation.

The other large source of inspiration is that Tolkien fought in and lived through WWI. The books were far more about courage, friendship, peace, and love. The movies being more focused on the battles detracts from what Tolkien was trying to get at.
Conflicts like racism were more pronounced in the book, and the romance where Gimli the dwarf woes an elf lord, or how dear of friends Legolas and Gimli become, are much more apparent in the book. Unfortunately a movie about love and friendship, the goodness of nature, and defeating evil isn't as likely to be a box office hit.

  2. The Ents are the US in the World War allegory.

The meaning behind the story, I think, can be summed up in this quote from Return of the King:

“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”

  3. One thing I realized, which affects standard a lot, is that some 3 colour decks are very janky due to mana issues. I've been trying to build Jeskai prowess decks for a while and I've really found that the lack of fast lands (only seachrome coast exists) really hurts the archetype for more aggro builds. The colour combinations that have triomes currently in standard are also the ones which have two different etb tapped unless you control two or fewer other lands, and I think that does a lot to shut out certain decks/archetypes/colour combinations from the game.

  4. I am with seth, the "one" one ring should end up in the hands of a person who is like cool card and just jams it in there causal commander deck, unknowing its worth. In the end magic is a game and the cards are the pieces you play with, the fact that collecting has had the such the massive affect on the game it has is sad.

  5. They didn't put LoTR in standard because the set needed to be reviewed by the ip owners so they didn't have a certain date for realease. The set was done one year ago.

  6. Even if you think the walking part is boring it has awesome New Zealand scenery and great music.
Also the 2nd movie ends with a long battle. And there is a lot more fighting in the 3rd movie.
