Action Park was an amusement park located in Vernon, New Jersey, that operated from 1978 to 1996. The park was known for its dangerous and sometimes deadly attractions, which included a wave pool with unpredictable waves, a ski slope with poorly maintained equipment, and a looping waterslide that often resulted in injuries. Despite these hazards, Action Park continued to attract thrill-seekers from all over the country, becoming a cultural icon of the 1980s. The park’s lack of safety measures, combined with inexperienced and untrained staff, led to numerous accidents and several fatalities. Despite the risks, the park remained popular, and its wild reputation only seemed to add to its allure. Despite its dangerous reputation, Action Park has a cult following and is remembered by many as a symbol of an era of fearless, no-holds-barred fun. The park’s legacy has been the subject of numerous articles, documentaries, and even a book, and its name is still synonymous with dangerous, unregulated amusement park attractions. While the park may have been infamous for its danger, for those who experienced it, Action Park will always be remembered as a place where anything was possible and the excitement was nonstop.

  1. Action Park was awesome. Got hurt every single time I went, but it was still cool. One uncle broke his collar bone on the tube ride. Another uncle was brave enough to ride the loop slide. The water was cold as hell, but it was always a good time.

  2. I rode the cannonball loop most people came out with bloody noses. It was a great place and a lot of fun. One of my friends wore a football jersey on the Alpine slide it actually melted to his skin from rubbing on the track.

  3. One story I used to hear about the Cannonball Loop was that it was designed personally by the owners. On a napkin. While they were blind drunk. Probably ain’t true but not actually surprising if it is.

  5. I don’t remember the year, however; Action Park was my first experience with a water park. I still remember cutting up my elbows so badly that there was blood all the way down my arms. I remember the rope swing over the pond. A natural pond! Not Man made. I don’t believe the rest of the Park was built yet. Incidentally, the Park was the Playboy Club prior!!! I was one very happy adolescent going there with my Parents when they were trying to sell Time Shares(it failed) though my parents came home with a camera 😂👍😎. Damn, I’m getting old.

  6. 13:35 minutes. I don’t know how old the presenter of this video is, but we lived differently back then.
The 80’s were my teenage years, we weren’t so risk averse and definitely not nearly as litigious.
I went to action park as a teen and had a great time.

  7. The stories you're telling us reminds me of everything I heard when I moved here in New Jersey from Canada. I was always thinking. Gosh people are crazy down here. Still think to this day that people are still crazy. As well as hearing the stories. You weren't an adult until you went to action park showing off your battle scars from surviving the rides. The classic stories I used to hear from the older generations of friends. I'm actually happy the park was acquired by another company and made it so safe. You won't actually get hurt we hope

  8. There were several of these parks near Lake Winnipesaukee in Central New Hampshire. I really liked the alpine slide, BUT. You might think it is like a bike and you need to lean into the curve except you needed to lean out of the curve. When you leaned into the curve the 'car' just slips out from under you. My son and I were sharing a car, he was 6. The car flipped out and we both ended sliding down the concrete and asbestos track. He got a rub burn on his wrist. We got back on the car and I asked him if he wanted to go again? YES.

  9. It’s sad that places like this don’t exist anymore, people die every day skiing skydiving surfing skating and doing all sorts of other stuff like hiking even, people should have the option to take responsibility for themselves in the name of fun. Get off the couch and go enjoy the reward of risk.

  10. 7:55 how did they come out head first? I tracked how feet would go and it’d be the first to come out. Even the video (which wow, I’ve searched before and never found anything) shows the woman coming out feet first.

  11. As a resident of NJ since 1994 I had often heard of stories about this place. My wife and I visited it a couple of years ago. This place is legendary in NJ, and I know many people who visited it in the 1980's and 1990's. There was even a movie loosely based on it that was made. I can also testify that the water temp is really really really cold. I don't believe they even heat it. Even to this day.
