Every year the Chunin exams are held, this year candidates from the other four major shinobi nations came to Hidden Leaf (one of the five nations) all with permits like passports because just like here, you can't cross a state border without a passport. Look out for Gaara, Rock Lee and Neji things will get more interesting as the episodes go on 😉

The Chunin exams are the point where Naruto really starts. And after the really good first arc that means something.
PS: Yes the Genjutsu (illusions) are really intricate and powerful.

Yes the Chunin exams do change nations like a deadly version of the Olympics.
Land of Fire= capital Leaf Village ; Leader Ho Kage= Fire Shadow
Land of Wind= capital Sand Village; Leader Kaze Kage= Wind Shadow
Land of Water= Capital Mist Village; Leader Mizu Kage= Water Shadow
Land of Thunder= Capital Cloud Village; Leader Rai Kage= Thunder Shadow
Land of Earth= Capital Stone Village; Leader Tsuchi Kage= Stone Shadow
Chuunin exams happen every six months or so, barring extraneous circumstances. They change between the nations each time, supposedly.
Almost every nation only has one Hidden Village (ninja town), but only the Five Great Nations have Kage
