‘Never too late to take action’: Australia must lift the ban on nuclear

Nuclear Engineer and 2023 Miss America Grace Stanke has weighed in on the nuclear debate in Australia.

“It really surprises me that there is a deliberate ban [on nuclear],” Ms Stanke told Sky News host Chris Kenny.

“I firmly believe the ban should be lifted.

“It is never too late to take action.”

  1. And it will, once Dutton gets in, which he is predicted to.
Until then, the meltdowns of the left here are genuinely hilarious.
Nothing but excuses when cornered for a debate. Desperately switching accounts to reply to oneself and like own posts. It's beyond sad.
    Please, waste your time

  2. Newcastle 5.5 earthquake was felt over 200,000 sq klms…
Damages to buidings and facilities over 9000 sq klms.

4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Quorn SA on January 11 2025, only 39 klms from Peter Duttons proposed nuclear reactor site in Port Augusta….😳

  3. The people of Fukushima and surrounding areas were very happy from that clean energy source…. until, we all know what happened. And now a huge area of Japan is so polluted no one can live there. For hundreds of years perhaps. But we will do it different way I hear. We will never make those same mistakes as in Japan or Chernobyl etc.. Maybe not the same mistakes but different ones. I don't think it's worth the risk. And are there problems with getting rid of nuclear waste?

  4. Those who live in the real world will know, so far France and the EDF cant even build 4 reactors in France to replace those becoming redundant. Its likely Sizewell C will blow out significantly not be complete or haulted indefinitely. Duttons little fantasy is just that and hes lying to Australians.

  5. If you have one of the world's biggest Uranium mines, AND the most stable tectonics, then using nuclear power is a complete no-brainer. But as in the UK the public appear to have a predilection for electing politicians whose IQ falls considerably short of 3 figures.

  6. For a bill to become law, it must be agreed to by both the Senate and House of Representatives and receive Royal Assent by being signed by the Governor-General.

A Matter of Urgency put by Senator Babet on Nuclear Power was voted on in the Senate on 13 Sep 2023. There were 31 NOES (4 majority) and 27 AYES with zero pairs, with the Question negatived.

Senators representing their respective states generally serve for two parliamentary terms, unless there's a double dissolution. Senators representing their respective states, who gained their seats during the last federal election, on 21 May 2022, will continue sitting for another parliamentary term, unless they resign or die in office, in which case traditionally a replacement from the same political party is appointed to take their seat. The terms of service for senators representing the ACT and the NT expire at the close of the day immediately before the next polling day for the next general election.

There are 76 senators. The Senate is elected by a system of proportional representation which ensures that the composition of the Senate more accurately reflects the votes of the electors than the method used to elect members of the House of Representatives. In the Senate, at least 19 senators – one quarter of the total number of senators – must vote in a division for it to count. The bill is passed if a majority – more than half of senators present in the Senate on the day – vote for it.

What’s the likely vote for the senators with their terms extending to 30 Jun 2028 on repealing the legislative ban on nuclear power?

    Party _ _ Senators _ _ _ NOES _ _ _ AYES _ _ _ Indeterminate
    ALP: _ _ _ _ 12 _ _ _ _ _ _ 12
    AG: _ _ _ _ _ _5 _ _ _ _ _ _ _5
    LP: _ _ _ _ _ 10 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 10
    LNP_ _ _ _ _ _1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _1
    NATS: _ _ _ _ 3 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _3
    PHON: _ _ _ _1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _1
    UAP: _ _ _ _ _ 1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _1
    IND: _ _ _ _ _ _3 _ _ _ _ _ _ 2 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1
    TOTAL: _ _ _ 36 _ _ _ _ _ _19 _ _ _ _ _ 16 _ _ _ _ _ _ 1

It seems the Coalition would need to muster at least another 23 senators to get a majority of 39 senators agreeing to repeal the legislative ban on nuclear power. If they cannot, then the nuclear power ban continues until perhaps after next election in 2028, or there's a double dissolution.
