This is well written and narrated. It reminds me of that Tumblr thread where aliens invade earth and are being wiped out by everyday things. And not understanding there are certain animals you just don't mess with.
Well done.. very well done.. I'll tell you of my own experiences and how closely that story mimics this grand work.. I enlisted, served in the Cold War, my post was in the Air Force, Security Police assigned nuclear weapons security… and everyday was preparing to defend that base against Soviet, or Warsaw Pact forces, Jihadists seeking to destroy these weapons, and, or our Command and Control over 200 ICBM's, Minuteman III's. To prevent our retaliation should the LAST war come..
Once we went to a Battle prepared DEFCON.. When President Reagan was shot.. Every Airman loaded onto buses and went on post.. We set up defenses in depth, not knowing yet, it that attempt on My CIC was the Soviets trying to decapitate our nuclear response, should the Soviets launch a first strike.. Thankfully, it was just one lone lunatic.. and after the longest Day we ever knew, we stood down, certain it wasn't the Soviets..
Later.. When the Soviet Union collapsed, and the Cold War ended… I along with many others who knew far more about events in the Cold War than we wanted to remember.. Breather a sigh of relief.. Mankind wasn't going to end in nuclear fire.. and for once we looked at the future with Hope that mankind had finally learned that super weapons were not the best way to build a peaceful future of mutual respect.. There would be no nuclear war to fear in the future,.. Finally.. we could join with the Eastern nations to build a better future for all…
That dream ran into the inevitable flaws in mankind, as different factions struggled and fought to become the newest big kid on the block.. Even as NATO became not a defense pact as it was designed.. but it became aggressive.. pushing further east.. and Russia became a corrupt oligarchy driven by greed.. The US too, was torn by factional differences as the left tried to remake America into another oligarchical State.. So much corruption we need to route out.. We need to join hands, stand against the deep state trying to enslave us all.. Liberal and conservative, we share far more together than we do with the oligarchs who would ruin it all..
It's the divisions and factional hate that holds us back from a much brighter future..
but our story continues.. will we find a road to Peace?.. I hope.. pray so..
The ending to your story?.. THAT is how I pray we end up.. fighting only when we must.. and making friends as best we can to work towards that brighter future we'd all like.. Mankind has so many flaws.. sins.. it's only by building and sharing with each other we can hope to overcome that backroom thirst for factional power, to think of making LIFE the biggest goal for us all..
I did swear an oath once, and I'd still fight to defend what I am sworn to.. but I really hope we, all of mankind can find a better way.. a way without blood, suffering.. Like the Man Wallace became.. a builder of bridges, and hope in a future where we can find even more friends..
