  1. Yes, Pernida literally died by cancer, an ironic end, still such a great fight. The scenes with Szayelaporro are my favorites anyway.

    PS: no spoilers but I think you would have recognized Rukia, Soifon or Yoruichi voices in case. I don't say her name, but the title is already an hint about next episode.

  12. I honestly would like to see Mayuri try to flex on Urahara for creating a synthetic shinigami that can evolve and adapt. The two kids living at the Urahara shop (Ururu and Jinta) are both the exact same type of being as Nemu, but without the synthetic growth speed, and so that conversation isn't going to go the way Mayuri hopes.

    Also, I think that the poem is read by Nanao.

  17. This episode was the one I was most looking forward to this cour and the one I dreaded above all.

    Nemu finally evolved beyond Mayuri's "programming" and started acting for herself. This episode (and the chapters it adapts) is why I will never quite bring myself to like Mayuri. I will never forgive him for Nemu's death because of his hubris.

    Konpaku Sessaku (魂魄切削, Soul Cutting; Viz "Soul Slicer"): Nemu can cut off portions of her soul and use them to attack her opponent as an spiritual energy blast.

    Gikon Jūrinjū (義魂重輪銃, Artificial Soul Heavy Circle Cannon; Viz "Heavy Artificial Soul Cannon") is a technique which Nemu Kurotsuchi can perform via Konpaku Sessaku (魂魄切削, Soul Cutting; Viz "Soul Slicer"). Sacrificing 6% of her soul, Nemu fires it at her target in the form of a ball of energy, which blows a clean hole in the target by warping their body around itself.

    The reason Mayuri believes he surpassed Urahara is because he believes he and he alone has been able to create truly autonomous artificial souls (Mod Souls are limited by needing an external vessel) capable of self-evolution and rivalling Shinigami. Poor Mayuri isn't aware of Jinta and Ururu being Artificial Souls created by Urahara though I will grant Mayuri that Nemu is likely much stronger having been able to become a lieutenant in the Gotei 13 despite not being a Shinigami.

  19. – "Control" and "free will" are major themes here, fitting ones when dealing with "Science" and "Progress" (Even more so when talking about the Left Hand and Nemu who've been used, and controlled by others) Mayuri throughout this battle is leaping into the thralls of evolution, but as we see evolution is dangerous and should be approached carefully.

    Mayuri is clearly a character who is always in control, he prepares several times over, but as mentioned by Nem he forgets things before coming to this battle, but how do you even prepare for combat with something that embodies evolution?I'd argue the answer is also to evolve (as shown by Nemu and Pernida) and a major point of this battle is to show the slight yet poignant character progression of Mayuri, which is why they make it a point to show that other shinigami are thankful to him.

    – Mayuri is weird because morally speaking he's completely insane, his sense of ethics is completely different from ours but in his own crazy way, it's obvious that he did in fact love Nemu in his own twisted way, so much so that since he's made her he feels he's living in a Dream, Nemu was perfect to him and once she died he was made to wake up from this Dream.

    And at the end when he reclaims her cerebrum we see him re-enter his Dream-like state, deep within the oceans of progress, where he happily sinks.
    (The idea the he cherished her evolution over his own life is proof of his own pseudo means of being a parent)

    Pernida represents Development, individuality and adolescence, something the arm shares with Nemu. Pernida started out as the arm of the Soul King, but it rejected that. Pernida didn't want to be seen as just an arm, but as its own person. And throughout the fight it developed: Like an infant it at first couldn't speak, just mumble, just a few words and broken sentences. It became more intelligent and eloquent and even had a "rebellious teenage phase" (thanks to absorbing traits from Kenpachi) with the occasional bout of wisdom before becoming like an adult. It developed its own sense of right and wrong and grew beyond just being the arm of the Soul King. In the end Pernida was a full-fledged person, an individual that grew beyond its programming. Same for Nemu whose development we saw and which ended with her growing and evolving beyond her programming, deciding for herself what she wants and going against Mayuri's order and it ended with both their deaths. That brought the final piece of Mayuri's symbolism to full circle, parenthood and death and birth (Mayuri's sword is named after a psychopomp for dead children)

    – We learn here that Mayuri used the fetuses from his artificial soul research to reach the Bankai state, which gives clarity as to why his Bankai takes on the visage of a baby
    – Sidenote 2: The title of the chapter that concludes Mayuri's fight is "never ending dream"

  23. I missed it on my first watch, but when he says it has his bankai's ability, he meant peeling off it's own layers of skin to remove his drugs effect like how the baby did to not be affected by his nerves.

  27. An episode featuring both of Kubo's favorite characters (Mayuri and Szayelapporo). He always puts the utmost care when it comes to Mayuri and rightfully so, he's the most expressive character of the oraster and its always so much fun with him around

  28. The reason Pernida eats Nemu is because it learned how to do so through Mayuri's Bankai. During the fight, Pernida learned several things: how to talk because of Zaraki, gained Zaraki’s physicality, developed the skin-peeling ability due to Mayuri's Bankai, and even learned how to eat without teeth. Essentially, whatever Pernida touches, it learns and copies that behavior. If Pernida touches Aizen , it will copy Aizen‘s physicality and behavior.

  39. 😅😅😅😅 the fact that many dont understand when he said i have surpassed you Uruhara Kisuke is actually meant Kisuke have created someone similar to Nemu ….😅😅 remember Ururu Tsumugiya the little girl with him who kick Ichigo's rear on the 1st season yeah thats right she is similar to Nemu but Nemu have evolve further than her now 😁

  42. My weeb self thought it's common knowledge lol but to make it clear, Nemuri is the state of being asleep/in a dream. This goes perfectly with Mayuri who believes that perfection doesn't exist; so that if he ends up creating something perfect (which Nemu is to him) then he must be living in a dream, right?
