NATO Exercise: Ramstein Flag 2024 | Extended Version

Between September 30, and October 11, 2024, Ramstein Flag 2024 has brought together more than 140 aircraft from 12 NATO allies, simulating real world scenarios and complex operational challenges that we may face in the future, bringing the renowned “train as you fight” concept to a live NATO event. I am proud to say that during the course of this exercise, our aircraft flew an impressive 1200 sorties. This staggering number speaks to the scale and intensity of Ramstein Flag 2024.

Allied participation in Ramstein Flag 2024
Over 140 Allied fighter and enabler aircraft along with Maritime, Land and Special Operation
forces will execute integral components of Joint Air Power during RAFL24. Participating Nations
will be operating from bases in Greece’s West Peloponnese, Andravida Air Base will be the
primary operating base. Some aircraft assets will fly from their mother bases across Europe to
participate in the exercise. There are 12 Allied Nations taking part in RAFL24 with fighters,
support aircraft, SBAMD units, personnel and observers and advisors.
NATO members Canada France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain,
Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States will participate. Assets will include fighter
aircraft and supporting aircraft along with land and maritime assets.
Aircraft participating in RAFL24 include; F-35, Mirage, Rafale, F-16, Eurofighter, JAS-39 Gripen,
MQ-9, Rivet Joint, E3, E7, C130, A400.
Allied assets will operate from a number of airbases in Greece’s West Peloponnese with
Andravida acting as the primary air base. The missions will include both day and night sorties
therefore the exercise will offer robust training opportunities for Allied Forces and plenty to see
for our aviation enthusiasts
NATO units are supporting of RAFL24
NATO AWACS aircraft from Geilenkirchen, Germany, will be based at their Forward
Operating Base at Aktion/Preveza Air Base in the northwest of Greece. The AWACS aircraft
will provide Command and Control during the exercise in a complex IAMD and C- A2AD
scenario. The crew from 17 NATO nations will serve as airborne battlespace managers and play
a crucial role in coordinating Allied aircraft.
Under Allied Air Command, NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) at Torrejón,
northeast of Madrid, Spain has the primary mission to plan, direct, coordinate, monitor, analyse
and report on the operations of Air Policing means assigned to it in peace time. The unit’s area
of responsibility comprises southern European NATO airspace. It is responsible for some of
NATO’s special Air Policing arrangements, such as Air Policing over Albania, Montenegro,
North Macedonia and Slovenia.
