NATO Agrees to Build 'European Sky Shield' Amid Mass Russia Strikes

As Russia continues its wave of mass strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine, more than a dozen NATO members have signed on to an initiative to build a European air and missile defense system.)

Fourteen NATO allies and Finland, which is in the process of joining the defensive alliance, agreed Thursday to form the “European Sky Shield Initiative,” which will be led by Germany and will see European nations collaborate to acquire air defense equipment and missiles. According to a NATO press release, the initiative will strengthen the organization’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD), which works to stabilize and protect NATO airspace.

Concerns have been raised since the conflict began in late February that it could spread beyond Ukraine’s borders and even spark a direct conflict with NATO, though it is unclear whether Putin or the alliance would be prepared for such an escalation. While NATO plans to strengthen its own air defense in Europe, Ukraine has asked Western allies for more equipment to help defend its own airspace against Russian missile attacks.

The initiative will allow all nations involved to collaborate on the development of an air and missile defense system based on interoperable, off-the-shelf solutions. This multinational and multifaceted approach provides nations with a flexible and scalable means of strengthening their deterrence and defense in an efficient and cost-effective manner. The 14 NATO allies included: Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, and the United Kingdom.
