NASA, DARPA Will Test Nuclear Engine for Future Mars Missions
After World War II, engineers had become interested in utilizing the massive power of atomic fission for aircraft and missile propulsion but it was not until 1959, NASA began research into nuclear thermal rocket engines. A key program in the 1960s, called the Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application, even sought to demonstrate the technology in space β but that never came to fruition.
And now, when SpaceX will soon launch the orbital flight of its Starship vehicle that the company plans on eventually landing on Mars, NASA once again wants to design and demonstrate a working nuclear thermal rocket engine, reaching Mars in days.
βIβm pleased to announce that the nationβs next big development in space technology, is a major investment in getting to Mars.
β¦β¦
NASA will partner with our long-term partner, DARPA, to develop and demonstrate advanced nuclear thermal propulsion technology as soon as 2027. β
Well, how will exactly this happen?
How would nuclear rockets change space travel?
Can Nasa make this real to beat SpaceX on Mars?
All this and more in todayβs episode of Great SpaceX!
NASA and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recently announced a collaboration to demonstrate a nuclear thermal rocket engine in space, an enabling capability for NASA crewed missions to Mars.

thereβs just one BIG problemβ¦β¦..
NASA
Very promising.. but 2027 might be a bit too soon. Either way, it is the future of space rockets.. goodluck.. and… LETSGOOOO SPACEX!!!
If history of government based development is an indicator, I would not expect the test flight to happen until 2040+.
It's just a way for NASA to suck billions of government money when Elon could do it faster and penny's on the dollar
just throwing around the word Reveals huh. like it isnt just a dream atm.
NASA will never allow spaceX to beat them. They will collude with the FAA and other Federal agencies to keep spaceX from launching before them, as they did with their last billion dollar throw away vehicle.
Have they created it and does it work…. Probably cost a trillion… Haha. Give the tech to SpaceX and let them do it.
What ever NASA and DARPA does, Elon Musk will do it better and way cheaper.
SpaceX would have a nuclear rocket before nasa would.
I would be interesting to see the difference between ntr and nucs and ion drives. so instead of thermal, use electricity to propel ions….
Glad to see Nasa is getting on with bleeding edge science rather than trying to be amtrack in space. Space X, and the piranha to their great white, can do the freight. Nasa can figure out what the key parameters are.
Hmmm….would that reactor weigh around 250 tons?
We will see wink π π
fking head of NASA really?? NUCULEAR??
I understood that the Nerva program was canceled because of the US Russian treaty preventing nuclear weapons in space. The nuclear rocket was seen as a potential weapon.
"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago and the next best time is now"
Your thoughts on the current controlled extraterrestrial reality disclosure process and related US GOV cover-up? When the contagious giggling subsides, how will our civilization adapt to this publicly known reality?
What might be some of the potential implications of disclosure of this reality? Do we really want to know the full truth?
LMAO…. NASA only revealed the hypothesis for this…. it still in development stages, NASA wants Billions of you Tax dollars and 20 years to make it. Elon will have this in a few years.
It's incredibly expensive not going to mars as it is without not having to go there quicker.
I donβt think at this point NASA could make a ham sandwich come true
Voyager had a nuclear generator on board to provide power. So, launching a radioactive device has been done. What could go wrong?
…because your strapping yourself to a nuclear missel to go to Mars. To many things can go wrong. If a microscopic piece of space dust flies into the reactor…boom… if there is a reactor leak… radiation sickness… its just not practical. We can use any kind of propellant… why does it have to be nuclear? It doesnt.
There have been radioactive energy sources launched on the Voyagers, perhaps others, the Radioactive thermal generators. A reactor, with adjustments for the reactivity/criticality would probably need some launch g-force lockdown systems. In case of a crash, the containment would need reinforcement.
NASA/DARPA wouldn't be investing so heavily into Thermal Nuclear Electric Propulsion unless the "Proof of Concept" stage was well founded. My guess is the X-37B has been doing some of that testing for some time now. These secret government programs never become public knowledge until it's been in Military service for ten yrs or more based on other secret programs of the past. Hope they get it figured out and find a RELIABLE launch system for getting these things to Space.

Cleaner is a plus, however WHAT could go wrong?
Is China 'propelling' Nelson's NASA prediction?
what if there was a catastrophic launch failure?
Nu kill er ?
Yes because every launch is flawless.
And every failure will be uninhabitable for decades to centuries.
NASA needs to spend the very limited funds they are provided each year on new breakthrough technologies, and not launch systems (let the private sector handle that). New engine research is a great idea, and could easily be provided to SpaceX (via contract) to be used in on-orbit conditions such as earth lunar and earth mars transit operations.
I would far prefer they cancel the entire launch component of the Artemis program (give it to SpaceX) and place all that money into new science. Yeah, politically this will never happen as all those constituent jobs would shift away to private aerospace companies across multiple States etc…
I still believe that we should develop rocket fuel made out of Democrats. We could finally find a good use for them. ππ
Fucking Christ man I have never heard anyone pronounce los Alamos like this wtf lol
