  1. We're still working with 50, 60, and in some cases 70 year old concepts and technologies. As far as all human survival needs are concerned, mankind has survived here on earth with Ingenuity for millenia with not so much technology. Innovation and improvisation will be important as well. Perhaps humans need to put boots on the ground first to initially survey Mars at the same time as robots for a better understanding of what we're up against. 😊

  2. right they want to land a starship on mars which will kick up a massive blast area THEN at the same place re launch AGAIN kicking up a massive blast area.
    there are mars moons they could convert into bases and use smaller shuttles to desend and return.
    that way bigger ships could leave earth and not have to land on mars saveing massive amounts of fuel.

  3. They will need 2 reactors, two is one, one is none. Everything will need redundancy, you can't walk home.
    2 Starships is a joke, it will be more like 20 to shift everything needed such as the mining and refining gear for water, O2 and Methane plus the equipment needed to store it long term; you either keep it damn cold or store it under a lot of pressure, earthmoving equipment to build the pads, shielding, transport, food, scientific equipment and the 1000 other things that will be needed to survive almost 60 months on Mars. Yes, 60 because if they miss the window . . .

    We don't want dead Mars explorers and we can't afford them either because it would set the program back years or decades. Gone are the times when if your expedition didn't come back you just sent out another one.

  4. Can't they just send Tanker-Starships with landing legs to Mars? But these should land way further than 1km from everything xD
    Or if that's too heavy for one go, create separable smaller tank-ships, which transfer the liquids from the ship to the surface.
    When Tankership is empty, send it back to earth to refill or land it empty and use it.

  5. People worried about being able to return to Earth:
    1) An orbital circulator was many years ago proposed by a NASA astronaut to go between Earth and Mars orbits to carry goods and people. Possibilities would include a Starship with a compact reactor for power. [Solar panels become to large to be practical much beyond Earth orbit.] Shuttles between orbital stations and the circulator reduce the amount of fues the circulator uses.
    2) One reason to consider this to be a one-way trip is the gravitational difference; after some 3 years in reduced gravity the bone density becomes a serious issue. Another is the real probability of accidents, etc.
    3) A number of ideas are under consideration regarding passive radiation shielding. Lava tubes seem to exist. Building with brick lined with (believe it or not) polymer, or water. The list goes on.
    4) Bacteria have been found on Earth that can render regolith safe for Earth life-forms.

  6. Of course it can't get us to Mars. It's a LEO tugboat right now. To get there and back takes fuel by the kt and a working interplanetary launch stack and a functional gas station in orbit. It's only a LITTLE bit different if you can make the fuel on Mars… right now we don't bother to drag a heavy sections along for the ride when we visit the moon. The VASIMR tug concept and a small modular reactor augmented by some solar solve the interplanetary specific impulse problem dragging people, launch vehicles, and fuel through various transfer orbits and the high power designs mean you have plenty of spare energy for things like passive and active magnetic radiation shielding to capable of protecting sensitive equipment and components.

  8. Why not just land a dozen starships ahead of time. Two years before the crew is sent out. That way you can be confident that you have all the resources you will need for a couple of years. And beyond that you can send starship tankers to orbit Mars from Earth ahead of time, to refill the starship when it gets there. Not a very efficient way of doing things, but a possible way to do things.

  9. For such an intelligent species… we sure can be dumb at times.
    We seem stuck in the paradigm of “putting the cart before the horse”, due to the bravado inspired by misnomers like, “because we can.”
    Too many believe in this odd, sci-fi fantasy… that we will simply board a spacecraft here on earth, and flit off to another planet to colonize it.
    Meanwhile, the closest thing we’ve had to a permanent space station to date, is the ISS, which has been (at best) nothing more than a rudimentary proof of concept project.
    Build a real space station (capable of housing, feeding, protecting, supplying a sizable and permanent population indefinitely) here in Earth’s orbit first.
    Then we can talk about how to repeat the process in orbit of another world.
    Studying mars from orbit, including short excursions to the surface and back… is far safer than “camping out” in the equivalent of a camper trailer on a potentially deadly planet.
    1)
    Build a permanent space station in earth’s orbit.
    2)
    Build a spacecraft capable of carrying thousands of passengers AND millions of tons of cargo, which would be able to journey back and forth between Earth orbit and Mars orbit.
    3)
    Build a space station in mars’ orbit.
    4)
    Use the mars’ orbit space station as your base of operations for all exploration of mars.

I wonder why considering all this incredible development on Mars has to be done autonomously prior to humans actually landing on Mars should they wish to avoid it being a suicide mission, or at least in any notable presence at best, why so little of the development of Starbase itself seems to have involved construction in such a manner to surely at least get some idea as to how it might be done and how these autonomous systems might operate. Or is all this being done secretly elsewhere perhaps using Optimus robots working their little metal heads off between the Dad dancing demonstrations. Seriously though has anything actually been demonstrated as to how the infrastructure would or could be built autonomously on Mars? All the visuals seem to suggest numerous humans controlling everything rather like we do on Earth, a bit like how it was done in ‘For All Mankind’ indeed yet certainly Angry's, and some other’s assessments you need an awful lot of infrastructure in place before any number of humans could arrive there. All seems a bit chicken and egg unless it’s done very gradually over many decades just to get things going. Is that the real plan and Musk is just trying to disguise that reality by powerful but unrealistic words and imagery?

  11. @10:17 Refilling in orbit does not "reset the rocket equation". Quite the opposite in fact, as reusable ships have reduced payload and this significantly exacerbates the exponential effect of the rocket equation. Please do not fabricate misinformation! There already ample misinformation in circulation already.

  12. Let's go over this one more time…Without going to the Moon first, developing and perfecting the technology to live off planet, you'd be committing suicide heading to Mars. You'd also be substantially setting space exploration behind, the general public isn't interested in watching people take their last breath with no possible chance of rescuing them.

  13. The report you referenced was published over two years ago, was not published by NASA, and cannot be found on NASA's Technical Reports Server. A few of the many authors seemed to have jobs at NASA, but many other authors are just working at New Space companies – companies who's business models depend on their investors buying into the Starship/Musk vision.

  14. Currently SpaceX Falcon launchs 1-2 times per week. That will be the cadence of fully reusable startship. That will also come a lot sooner than you think. Such low cost tonnage to orbit solves so many problems. It means much lower cost to mars.

  15. Maybe a dumb question/thought, but how come we (America) can send people to fight in die in wars all over the world but risking a few human lives on establishing a colony on mars is Unacceptable?? If I was a soldier I’d take the gamble on the starship 😏

  16. Elon is a "back of the envelope" kind of thinker. He is NOT very good at details. He has Gwynne Shotwell to keep the engineers from leaving and keeping them on task to make Elon's dreams a reality.
    NASA is the agency that can figure out every single detail to make a plan work with a relative certainty. They know they cannot survive disasters, so they try to avoid them.
    Elon is sort of like Trump….. in fact Elon is now EXACTLY LIKE TRUMP. He could literally kill an entire crew on Starship, and all his fanboys would excuse it as necessary for progress and use the history of exploration as their evidence that we are all pu$$ies for whining about dead people.

  17. Clearly, we will need YEARS of robotic missions to construct the infrastructure to insure that humans don't die when we finally send them.
    And for all you guys out there that say that the effort to go to Mars would be better spent on figuring out how to live sustainably on Earth, I say you are pretty well correct. However, the effort we will harness to survive on the Moon and Mars will be exactly what we need to survive on Earth. It will make us be able to survive some sort of planet killing disaster.

  18. It's entirely feasible for the establishment of Mars colonies to be done with robots. The main factor, by far, is the amount of time that it would take to develop the technology, build the equipment and to get everything to Mars. Also the associated cost.
