MYTHOLOGY OF DRAGONS PART 1 – Origins & Primordial Dragons | World Myth

Before we understood what lay beyond the edges of the world, mapmakers would mark uncharted realms with terrifying sea creatures and monsters. From this, we get the phrase: hic sunt dracones, or “here be dragons.” Beyond these warnings lay the dread unknown, where only the bravest explorers ventured forth. The dragons guarded the way to knowledge and discovery. But of course, we can’t resist a mystery, and so we set sail to meet them.

In all of mythology, in all of the cultures & traditions spanning the history of humanity, there is no single creature more prevalent and powerful than the dragon. It takes on many forms, from the classic western winged dragon to the giant serpent, to the eastern dragon, to more birdlike forms and beyond. Their behaviors and symbolism also differ depending on the tradition, but the dragon has far-reaching influence that has kept it relevant even to the present day.

  1. These stories are still important. I am a pagan. I believe in the ancient gods. As much as the Christian religion wants to shut us down and destroy my faith we will never be lost or back down.

  2. this channel is gold content
    streamlined mythology
great source of inspiration, and even on its own it stands up with great production value without overcomplicating things
looking forward to see how deep into the various mythos of cultures around the world it will go
perhaps branching out into the occult mythos could also be a good source of inspiration for various legends to unearth and refresh

  3. The chaoskampf (the hero god vs the chaotic sea monsters) could be a video on it's own: YHWH vs Leviathan, Baal vs Yam, Marduk vs Tiamat, Ra vs Apep, Zeus vs Typhon, Thor vs Jormungandr, Indra vs Vritra etc.

  4. Old Testament scholar Ben Stanhope has made videos on the Leviathan (Why Leviathan isn't a Dinosaur) and the serpent of Eden (Why the Villain of Eden was a Serpent).
