I used to teach screenwriting and i loved using this flick. I would teach the novel, screenplay, and movie over three weeks. Great way to demonstrate how they are each different but all very good.
Hated this film, I felt blue balled at the end. I wanted Sean Penn's character to die or get arrested so badly, I know it's a liked film but it was a massive no from me wish I never watched it.
Such a sad story…

Just a correction Asia, that is not the same woman as the mom in the Conjuring. Dave's wife is Marcia Gaye Harden. The mom in the Conjuring was Lily Taylor.
I never clocked that they look alike. They really do.
if Sean Penn was a normal everyday kinda guy, he wouldn't have been available to act so well.
This is such a great movie. I always felt that Dave kind of wanted to die… that he thought he was a monster like the person/people that killed Katie! Crazy film! Directed by Clint Eastwood!

Top Five Movie of all time!
Hard movie to watch but it shows what a powerhouse performance that Sean Penn gave to finally win his 1st Oscar after being nominated 3 times prior. Tim Robbins deserved his Oscar and it was definitely would've won for Best Picture if not for the final installment of the LOTR for sure.
No, i was hoping it wasnt Dave and it was too obvious that they wanted you to think it was dave. Daves behavior wasnt weird considering what he went through as a child, so i just felt bad for him the whole movie

Woohoo!! I've been waiting forever for you guys to get to this movie, especially knowing how my boy loves crime thrillers! IMO this is the best ever. And it WILL stick with you. Thank you for doing it justice! If you want another great crime thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and also be memorable as hell, try Rivers Edge with a young Keanu Reeves, Do yourself a favor and don't wait for me to recommend it ten times like you did this last movie, you'll be glad you did. It was way too misleading, obvious, how Dave was portrayed almost throughout the whole movie.
Using lighting, angles, dialogues etc. pointing at Dave as the murderer.
And that's a pity because it's well made in other aspects.
