  9. Thomas Jefferson hand-selected Wm Clark and Meriwether Lewis for THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY Expedition/ I don't recall how many men it entailed. Sacagewa was only 16 and pregnant with Charbonneau's infant son who was nicknamed Pomp by Clark. They wintered in North Dakota, I think. Each man consumed many pounds of meat daily. Then on to what the Indians called "The Stinking Waters"—The Pacific Ocean. Lewis was the medical officer who lectured the men on many health concerns. He often had to treat some of them with silver nitrate when they contracted venereal diseases. Excavated outhouses sites confirmed evidences of VD. The expedition lasted from 1804-06. They had been given up as lost when they alas returned. Jefferson grieved the death of his dear friend, Lewis and never for a moment believed it to be a despondent suicide. The death occurred only 3 years after close of the expedition.
