  13. Unicorn was probably based on the African oryx. Large antelope that looks a lot like a horse, with a tail with a tuft on the end. Their long horns come to a sharp point and from the side line up so they look like a single horn. Some species are white like a unicorn. Not many Europeans would ever have gotten very close to them, as they are very skittish. All they would have seen was a white animal with cloven hooves, a long tuft of hair on it's tail and what looked like one long sharp horn.
