Well he was, they were fighting 9. Shadow in this show is like an older brother figure to sonic. He balances him out. I think the idea is he seems harsh and distant but his actions show he cares about Sonic more then emotions or words.
i always wanted to see shadow take off his inhibitor rings in season 3 too bad they didn't it would be a good scene for me him taking off the inhibitor rings on his air shoes when shadow is saving sonic the last time i saw him taking it off was in 06
My favourite thing about sonic prime is the egg man crew, their bantering is truly carrying the comedy of the show. Just having more than one egg man truly epic.

Shadow was just aware of how much Nine meant to Sonic, like Tails. He went easy to not risk hitting Sonic if the latter jumped in to protect the fox.
