My First John Farnham Experience! "Vocal ANALYSIS" of "You're The Voice" Live!

Another runner up in our Patreon poll in February, I’ve heard a lot about John Farnham from our strong contingent of Australian and New Zealand based patrons and absolutely had to jump right in. Considered the unofficial anthem of Australia, that’s quite a badge of honor to place on a song! How could it not be utterly amazing?!

Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to John Farnham for the first time, performing “You’re The Voice” Live.

  1. I am too an Aussie metalhead, but Johnny has one of the most amazing voices!… this song with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is one of the best… especially his mic flip…awesome!!🇦🇺🇦🇺🍻

  2. I have always loved this song ever since I was young and would hear it quite a lot. It is quite a mainstay in Aussie playlists for obvious reasons, Farnsey is a legend.

My mind was blown when I saw Blind Guardian did a cover of the song. I would never have thought that a power metal band from Germany would cover an Aussie pop song that I thought was rather obscure in the grand scheme of things.

I wish I could have seen him live but he is retired for good I am pretty sure at 73 years of age and after his cancer diagnosis and treatment last year. He did start winding down in 2002. But maybe I'll be proven wrong.

  3. Born in th UK I think but we've been been blessed to have singing his heart out here in Australia since the 1960s, so when you hear him in this video he is at the very top of his game. See if you can find him singing "Sadie the Cleaning Lady" when he was in his late teens. He is just a legend.

  4. This song featured on the first cassette I ever had – Summer ‘87! I made everyone in my year 4 class sing it for ‘show n tell’ one day…even provided each of them with a printed copy of the lyrics 😂 I’m sure that at some stage not too long ago, there was an unofficial debate going on as to whether ‘You’re the Voice’ or ‘The Horses’ (Daryl Braithwaite) should be Australia’s new National Anthem 🎶🤷‍♂️

…and if you’re looking for ‘interesting instruments’ in rock music – I suggest, and highly recommend, checking out the Canadian Rock Band “THE TEA PARTY”…..dubbed ‘Moroccan roll’ by the media! I suggest tracks 1, 2 & 6(‘Fire in the head’, ‘The Bazaar’, & ‘Sister Awake’) off their album EDGES OF TWILIGHT, and just because it’s an awesome song – track 1 (‘Temptation’) off their album TRANSMISSION! I’m positive that once you’ve heard these, you’ll knock yourself out with the rest of their unique material 🎶🤘😎

  6. This song… I've known it for ages, but learning a little bit from your awesome singing knowledge gave me a new respect for this guy. Most impressive moment for me, is when the bagpiper stops playing and salutes, and John returning this. I was hoping you'd notice, because I think you would have loved it. But somehow you seemed to manage to look the other way twice, just as it happened… Anyway, thank you for another interesting analysis. And bringing this powerful song back to life, because even today the message is so important.

  7. Everyone has said everything that needs to be said about Farnsey. So I want to mention – the woman with the studded corset and crimped hair is Lisa Edwards, she had a hit in Australia in the early 90s with a cover of Godley & Creme's "Cry". Another frequent backing vocalist was Jack Johnson, who had a few hits in the 90s with his outfit Southern Sons (I really recommend a listen to Hold Me In Your Arms). Jack's voice resembles John's A LOT.

  8. Really really urge you to check out his version – from the same concert, and an encore after a full concert at full energy – of the Beatles 'Help'. I-CON-IC.

  9. No Auto tune…..No BS ….JUST PURE TALENT! 'The Voice' in America is Steve Perry but mention 'The Voice' Downunder and it will always be John Farnham! FYI Steve Perry is my second favourite frontman and voice. I love Steve..BUT I ADORE Farnham.

  10. Farny has great talent and a great range. i totally forgot bagpipes were in this. There's a few Korn songs that have bagpipes in them done by Jonathon Davis. tyvm for doing an aussie.

  11. While this live version is excellent, I wish you'd reacted to the album version we Aussies have adopted as our special anthem. It's powerful music with a powerful message that is just as relatable today as when it was released. Thank you for bringing this song to so many people who may have never heard it before.

  12. I grew up watching John and my kids are third generation fans. This song stands behind every moment of advocacy I have ever done, every time I have spoken against a perceived wrong.

I truly hope John is ok, and his health is getting better

  13. The little teensy keyboard comes into its own in his song, Playing to Win, https://youtu.be/aaeKsidYfVk. They called it a keytar, and if you want to see its full potential, David Herschfelder played it to glory. The whole troup performed an amazing feat, and I was lucky enough to witness it. John is a master of mike stand flinging, and retreiving. The wonderful backup singers are Lisa Williams (crimped hair), Venettal Fields and Lindsay Field. They have been with him for so many years, I am not sure. John is currently battling mouth cancer, and the whole country is praying and supporting him. (Please Lord, don't take him from us yet)

  14. PLEASE do some Jimmy Barnes! Australia's other OTHER powerful voice.. there was even crossover events with the two! They both performed When Something Is Wrong With My Baby live a few times and it is BEAUTIFUL.

  15. John Farnham has many nick names Whispering Jack. But he is Most well known as The Voice. His version of Help from the Beatles is the best ever and really shows his vocal talent. Also the Song with Jimmy Barnes called When something is wrong with my baby shows his vocal power. Please watch both of those. You will not regret it. John is a real gentleman. An Icon and national treasure . Another is Tina Arena. Look up Tina Arena, Jessica Mauboy and The Veronicas performing "Chains" that will blow your mind!

  16. Blessed to have seen him live at what I’d consider his vocal peak during his Last Time Tour. And he was mind blowing. He was “the voice”. He danced around the notes with new inflections when I saw him sing this song live, taking this to new levels. I’ll never forget how powerful some of his highest notes were.

  17. Farnham’s voice is amazing, and he’s an unquestionably talented. But it’s also important to note that he is also an incredibly kind and funny performer. He loved performing (hence 300 final tours) and adored his audience. And the feeling was mutual.

  18. Still is Australia's unofficial National Anthem! 🙂 Also the bagpipes were added during the writing of the song as a homage to ACDC's long way to the top 🙂
