(It makes ALL the difference!)

In today’s episode of Beautiful and Bothered, Johnny Ross and Kevin Banzhaf discuss MORE Tarte Cosmetic’s Drama, the moment on Johnny’s first brand trip that left him in tears, and behind-the-scenes tea on influencer brand deals!

Once again, Tarte has a disastrous brand trip in Miami, filled with allegations of influencer favoritism, racism, and high-school-style drama. They discuss the ethics of smaller influencers being given worse rooms without a WORKING TOILET, more prominent influencers being chosen to stay as others were sent home, and whether these lavish brand trips are relevant. Johnny discusses his own experience on a brand trip with Benefit Cosmetics and how a pivotal moment left him in tears.

Ever wonder what it’s like doing a sponsored post as an influencer? Later on, they deep dive behind the scenes into influencer brand deals. Johnny spills the tea about the best and worst brands he’s worked with, learning to value his time, getting taken advantage of by brands, and the surprising lack of interest from brands boys in beauty receive.

  1. I can’t help but get aggravated as a consumer at these brands trips and ALL the free PR. Especially when it’s sold out everywhere online and in stores. I know companies have advertising/marketing budgets but I’m paying for that! Irritates me. I’m a broke bitch at heart forever…turns me off and I go elsewhere even tho I have the money!

  2. I don't like to be surrounded by people, specially if i don't know them…those brand trips sound like a nightmare from the deep of hell…also to those brands that will not give you their business because youvare a guy, i will said fu@k you, the make up and skin care that i have right now i got it because of your reviews …

  3. When I hear about these trips it's a major turn off. Like they're just catering to the popular girls. Exactly the way you guys put it. Turns me off from the brand. I have no desire to support that.

  4. I can't believe how unfair the online beauty industry is. I wish people would realise people's value more. The honesty and skills are rare but very valueble traits. I bought the GXVE by Gwen Stefanie mascara because of you. 🩷 and I love it.

  5. I think the true reason for the Tarte brand trip was to create controversy so that people would actually be talking about the brand and thats why they keep on doing all these controversial things so they can stay relevant

  6. Ok I had to comment on this- no one, NO ONE other than you Johnny has convinced me to buy a make up product for a long long time. And just to give you the context, I am a working mum of 2 living in London so in terms of demographics, we are not even in the same ‘pot’. I came across your working at Sephora skits and I loved your make up and has been following you since (and a kind of a big fan too 😃). Then I realised how much I trust you because you have always been open, showed your integrity. So, yeah, some people may not like seeing boys in make up (hello hello 2023, wake up people), i could not care less as. AND more importantly I am willing to spend my money on everything you recommend. a bit of a long winded comment but keep up all your good work Johnny, there are lots of people who appreciate you! Ps. The meeting of beauty brands skit, I have lost the county of times I watched it. It is my go to pick me up TikTok ❤❤❤

  7. Omg Johnny 🥺🥺 Absolutely love this podcast — the candidness, the candor, the gut-wrenching vulnerability. What can your loyal followers like me do to better support your presence in the eyes of brands you love so you can be adequately compensated for the work you do? I would love to advocate 🤍

  8. I find myself never wanting these episodes to end. I’m a fellow introvert, and it just feels like kiki with friends without any pressure to participate 😂 I can be the fly on the wall I always hope to be in social situations 🙈

  9. You're the ONLY beauty influencer I follow, so any brand that skips over you misses out on my views! And I do view everything you post – I actively search out what the people I follow post. You're amazing!! And Kevin is too! I wish all the success in the world for you – you deserve it!!

  11. As an introverted anxiety ridden woman —- NOPE – those tart trips would be hell, but I’m in my 50’s and that’s not a group they, specifically, ever include anyhow 😂

  12. Your reportage of the Tarte "Brand Trip to Hell" is the most complete I've heard. I would guess that it might bring out any social anxiety anyone has, and uneven treatment would be very noticeable. Glad to hear someone tried (?) to apologize, no matter how weakly or the media outlet chosen. It would have been so easy for them to blow it off. I appreciate the willingness to tell of your experiences, Johnny. I have to wonder if Tarte invited any of the male influencers for this trip? PS: Johnny, you do know you can rent a private mailbox? That way, you'd have a shipping address that reads like a street address, and someone to hold your packages for you to pickup so you don't have them stacking up on the front porch if you're not home. It costs a bit, but I don't think that's a worry for you now. Try a UPS storefront shipping center.

  13. In my opinion you could sell ice cream in winter!!!!! Your charisma and energy is SO off the charts! Makeup and skincare is for everyone. I don’t care who’s making the video (guy, girl, etc) if they give honest reviews, give great tips, and no bs they have cred with me! GIVE! 💄💅🛍️🫦 btw SNL would be BLESSED with your talent!

  14. I always loved make up but I recently went through hating it. I watch some other beauty YouTubers but you are the only one that got me back to loving makeup again. I’m sooo grateful for you and your channels! Btw you both always look AMAZING!!! Johnny if you start your own brand I would love to be the first to purchase everything! Love you both soooo much!!!💜💜💜😊

  15. If a brand had influencers Give makeovers to people who are struggling And wanted to feel beautiful I would buy their products in a heartbeat Just to support their ability to do kindness again.. I think we would all rather see love in the beauty community than drama.

  16. Okay…I have never thought about what you said about being a boy in beauty. That is so upsetting. You are incredible for pushing through that. Also, i was the SAME WAY with Phantom of the Opera in kindergarten-3rd grade 😂 glad to hear I'm not the only one.

  17. I don’t think any brand should base something on a tiered level for who has more followers. But I also think tarte justified that because there are so many brands in other industries that award trips on top sales in a regional area and those they will tier. Again makes more sense in those type of settings vs follower count. I think tarte thought it was justified.
Anymore it doesn’t matter to launch a brand it’s get their name talked about. So the person ( doesn’t follow beauty news) who walks into Ulta goes oh I always hear tarte must be a good brand.

  18. As someone who worked retail for way too long, your skits let me laugh at the memories of both toxic and endearing customers. And I trust you and Robert Welsh on makeup before anyone else. 62 in Illinois.

  19. You are amazingly talented you deserve all the brand deals and Collaborations your heart desires I rarely find myself tempted to buy make up from influencer recommendations but I find you more credible than any of the women influencers out there as you are so honest and I appreciate that so much.I adore these podcasts I’m really enjoying them thanks for all you do .🥰

  20. Ummm, any company or brand that spruiks inclusivity is only doing it for sales. They don’t actually care, it’s just positive PR. This Tarte oddness is planned. The excuses or explanations are fake.
