  1. In defense of Sokka's choice to go over the rocks (aka 'cheating'): it takes a good leader to know the skills they have at their disposal and place people in effective positions, which he does there with the benders in his group. He later thinks of using the perfume and showcases those same leadership qualities in actual combat. Honestly, everyone shows some of their best qualities in this episode (and some of their flaws, like Aang). Such a good character episode for many of them!

My original reaction to Aang this episode in regard to hiding the map was to be angry with him, but when I thought about it further – Aang has lost literally everyone he ever knew and has formed a found-family with Katara and Sokka. His circumstances are so outside what most of us would ever experience in terms of losing everyone we know that it's hard to know what we would act like in a similar position. It also follows his character in that he's conflict-avoidant. It would have been better for him to confront the possibility of losing Katara and Sokka, but instead he chose to suffer in silence believing they would leave him if he told them. It's a point of learning for him and hopefully from here, he can develop towards telling his friends his concerns instead of hiding his feelings.

  2. One of my favorites. I understand that objectively it isn’t the beat. But i love it.

I love Sokka’s character arc. Learning how to take responsibility and being humble enough to admit when he is wrong.

It is relatable for kids, and adults. Saying something in anger that you regret. Making a bad decision in the heat of the moment. The point is Sokka immediately takes responsibility and takes actions to fix his mistakes. He is a good role model for kids.

This episode is unpopular in the fandom but i think it gets too much crap.

  3. Aang's reaction is even more understandable when you think how everyone he knew, the people he considered family were wiped out and for Aang it still feels like it wasn't 100 years ago but maybe only months ago that he was with them, and after he discovered that they were all killed Katara and Sokka said they'd be his family now and then he's hearing them talking about possibly leaving him alone again. That would be twice that he lost his family in a very short time.
