We are kicking off project MMO – our mission to play through the biggest current MMOs and see how they set themselves apart from games like WoW and FF14 and to clear the current raid content in each game. In this video Mike begins his journey into Guild Wars 2 completely blind.

Hello everyone – if you've been watching stream lately you'll know Mike has been working away on Project MMO; his journey to try out and complete a current raid in all of the major MMOs. Now he is finally ready to chart this experience for our folks on Youtube. Today Mike talks about his first day playing Guild Wars 2 – he played it completely blind and wasn't even reading chat to try and get as authentic an experience as possible.
Guild Wars 2 happens to be the preferred MMO of our own Lady Bex – what has your experience been of the game?
Disclaimer: In the interest of disclosure, ArenaNet provided us with Heroic editions of the game once they heard about our project. Otherwise was not sponsored or anything.
try to use the action combat camera mode. probably the best feature for combat. at least for me. so i'd like to see how you like it
You've probably already figured this out by now, but unlike WoW, the buffs in GW2 are all very short, and non descriptive. There's a reason for this however.
The GW2 buff icons, once you've learned what they do, aren't to make you aware of the buffs on your person, they're timers. Some of those buffs at the bottom indicate that if you use an ability, depending on your class and ability used, you have X amount of seconds to combo your ability with theirs.
For instance, a friendly AoE damage reduction buff on the ground might be combo'd with another classes HoT, and bam. The ability on the ground now becomes a dome shield that now ALSO reduces magic damage, or further increases the damage negated etc. You might have X amount of abilities, but when you think about what you are able to combo with other players, that number jumps considerably.
Essentially, because of this ability to combo your abilities with other players, there is no holy trinity, because your raid IS the holy trinity. The entire raid is now responsible for damage reduction and healing to keep individual players relatively healthy enough until their own survival abilities come back off CD.
You really gotta try a different storyline. I think you'd enjoy the charr stories a lot more.
Preach! Thank You for this brother! As the underdog of the MMO industry, it's nice to see someone like you take some time and put some spotlight on GW2. Welcome to the world of Tyria my brother!
gw2 whit expansions is the best mmo ever
Hey Preach I appreciate you covering Guild Wars 2. I do not agree with your general perspective towards leveling, but I love the content!
For your info Mike, dunno if you noticed later on but in your inventory, you have a box icon in the upper right corner. This puts all of your crafting mats in the crafting inventory. Very very useful đŸ™‚
GW2 does have the holy trinity for end game content. Just FYI
Runescape and Lost ark Gang
The ideal mmo would have ff14 levels of story, characters and OST, GW2 levels of level design and mounts, WoW levels of achievements and collections and pets and toys and all that. Kinda divided on raids, I like how ff14 does things but their fights could use a bit more randomness and the raid maps could be bigger. Otherwise the mechanics are much more creative than WoW raids.
play some BDO!
i literally CANNOT wait until you jump into destiny 2. i absolutely love that game and have beaten every raid and dungeon, i would be honored if you let me teach you the raids
Might makes me right NOTED… Just got into the game because of your stream and loving it so far, the Sylvari starting area is what Ardenweald should have been.
You're playing WoW again? I thought you dropped that like a bad habit?
Preach and co just keeps giving. Brilliant stuff! If GW2 does good so does WoW when they tief things.
Lost ark is very a cinematic MMO
The wiki of the game is very good you can even /wiki+item ingame and it opens the wiki page of that item
You're going to love Destiny 2 raiding!!! I'm so excited a big MMO channel is going to try this! Finally! But as far a GW2 I think it is the closest to a third gen of an MMO and not doing the WoW format which I consider second generation.
I always liked this game, but I always end up dropping it after a while cause for my taste, it lacks focus and direction. I realized a while back that in MMOs I need a carrot to chase to enjoy them, and GW2 moves away from that concept for the most part. Which I found refreshing at first but soon enough I ended up looking for a direction and couldn't find it.
Welcome to the game! You probably found this answer already but most trophies are tied to those heart shape quests/tasks and once you've completed them you can just delete/sell them! There is so much amazing multiplayer content in this game that I can only imagine that if you already really like the core games content, you'll be head over heals with it once you start playing the expansions! You strike me as someone who loved figuring out but if there is some stuff you'd love to understand a little faster, don't be a stranger! Have a great time!
As a player who isn't fan of mmorpgs this is the one that hooked me up for years. THE UI is like every other MMORGP and the information too much like every other mmorpg. But once you get with it it is amazing cuz there is so much to do.
Not sure if I should try Guild Wars 2 or Black Desert Online, all I know is that WoW and FFXIV are both garbage.
There are two options to turn off camera shake. Camera shake and player camera shake. OFF and you will be way better đŸ™‚
I may be jumping the gun on this comment, as im only 2-3 mins into the video
But why the fuck are you constantly comparing everything to WoW?
The ONLY thing WoW did better than previous (yes previous) MMOs was advertise more
I can think of 10-20 MMOs that were before WoW (and if can think of that many i bet there was 2 or 3 times that amount, so why do you think every other MMO starts with WoW and then branches out to their own thing?
Why wouldnt game devs start with Asherons call or Anarchy Online, or Ultima Online, and branch out from there?
Also, – and its possible im misinterpreting you words here, if so, apologies – but dont describe yourself as someone who has "played MMO's for 16 years" if what you really mean is "i played WoW for 16 years"
This doesnt make you an MMO expert, it makes you a highly specialised MMO gamer, it amounts to much the same thing as describing yourself as a Historian with 16 years experience, but actually you only studied WW2 for 16 years
Its misrepresentation at best, bald faced lies at worst
You should also know that your character voice is different for each race.
And yeah the starting story and early living world are really dull, with much less voice acting. Later almost all questions you ask during story will be voiced and not inside that wierd box.
Just going to add now, having watched the whole vid, you were fair about criticisms, for the mos tpart
I agree with you about story, and voice acting, i havent played the same race as you, so different stories, but i hate my characters voice, she sounds like a cartoon character, or one of those awful anime type things
The story i think depends what youre used to, ive heard many say how great it is, and we shall see if it gets better (im new too btw), but if youve been spoiled by great stories/quests, well then it wont be satisfying i think
I took a break from MMOS for like 3 years now? I feel like MMOSdo not offer me the best value for money (and time) relationship, why play an MMO when I can play Fallout new Vegas for the 100 time or game XYZ. The most recent MMO I played was Mount and Blade Online with a mod that makes the game run as an MMO it was a a fun and different take on the MMO perspective. I watched your videos all the way back from the wrestling videos with Ghosty and I am happy that you keep going. Trying new good MMOS seems like a good way to break the monotony.
I played this game many many years ago and it was basically going to different POIs. One day I'll get in and dig deeper into it.
It presents tp me disappointment because there is no controller support. It's the year 2023 and companies continue to ignore those who prefer controller. It's not a difficult task to accomplish so get it done already.
Did he compare gw2 combat speed to wow and said it slower đŸ˜‚đŸ˜‚. Also everything you do in gw is group content.
Fine game, but can't stand not having trinity. Clusterfuck instances are not fun for me.
Welcome to gw2!
Gw2 combat is so smooth and fast paced that cannot be compared with stationary WoW Gameplay xd
the story and voice acting blows hard, but the combat is unreal. unfortunately there are no oceanic servers so im forever at a disadvantage in pvp which i really enjoy, straight up dropped the game last year because of that because i got tired of losing because i was at a disadvantage because of where i lived.
I used to play this game years ago, got my fair share of maxed out toons. That said, as it always happens, life happens and I just didn’t have the time to play anymore.
This morning, I thought about this game and the great memories I had playing it. I was thinking about dl it again and playing on Friday nights. Is it still the gorgeous game that flows wonderfully that I remember??? Lol
Thanks for making this video to remind me even more what a beautiful game this is.
The VA for Norn Female PC gets better with Living World and Expansions, I didn't like it as well at the start, but the actress improved a lot on her performance (or maybe was given better direction, or both) during the life of the game. I'm so glad you're taking a look a GW2, it's always great to see what people think of some of the more foundational game systems, looking at them with a fresh eye of a new player.
GW2 is definitely a game I recommend everyone giving a ago even if you don’t stick with it. It does many things really well and is great value for time and money.
16:16 if you don't have an idea what to do with trophies or whatnot, just have a look at the official GuildWiki
you want multi-player action? you can join structured PvP maps/tournaments right off the tutorial, as well as OpenPvP in the form of World vs World (on paid accounts, F2P accounts have some level limits). the vanilla dungeons start at lv35 and fractals require you to have reached lv80
