Mt. Semeru volcano: Thousands on high alert after violent eruption on Java island

Villagers in Indonesia’s East Java are calling on the government to provide assistance in relocation as soon as possible after many had to evacuate their homes following Mt. Semeru’s violent eruption on Sunday, which sent ash onto surrounding fields, roads and bridges.

“My status now is living in a temporary shelter to store my things,” said Maryam, one of the affected villagers.

According to officials, the volcano which erupted some 640 kilometres east of the capital of Jakarta was still seeing high volcanic activity.

The eruption followed a series of earthquakes in the west of Java, including one last month that killed more than 300 people. However, as of Monday, no casualties had been reported so far from the volcano.

  1. Awesome. More good stuff for plants: "Plants also need secondary nutrients or trace minerals to be healthy. That is where the abundance of volcanic ash comes into play here. The ash contains dozens of minerals including magnesium, calcium, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron and zinc; all important to plant growth."

  4. “We really have the stupidest government in Europe,” she told the parliament, calling for Habeck to resign … The biggest problem is your grandiose idea of launching an unprecedented economic war against our most important energy supplier … “The idea that we are punishing Putin by impoverishing millions of families in Germany and destroying our industry while Gazprom is making record profits – how stupid is that?” Wagenknecht wondered. – 9 Sep, 2022

  5. "Scientists estimate that 50-80% of the oxygen production on Earth comes from the ocean. The majority of this production is from oceanic plankton — drifting plants, algae, and some bacteria that can photosynthesize."
