Eagles are one of the largest birds and among the most ferocious predators in the wild. These apex predators rank at the top of the food chain, proving that even birds can sometimes be dangerous killers.
But have you ever wondered why these birds happen to symbolise courage, power and freedom? What did they do to achieve this? Is a bird really capable of hunting down mammals twice its size?
Stick around to find out as we take a look at the most cruel hunting moments of hungry eagles. So, without further adieu, let’s begin.

Perhaps the most notable, as well as the deadliest feature an eagle has is its extremely sharp talons. Combined with a beak that can rip apart flesh like a hot knife going through butter. It’s safe to say that anything unlucky enough to come into contact with these daggers masquerading as talons is sure to regret it. Now you might already be aware of this, but, did you know that an eagle’s talons are made out of keratin? Yep. The same thing your hair and nails are made out of. So, even if some unfortunate turn of events lead to an eagle’s talons being torn or broken off, they can simply regrow them. But, just because they can grow them back doesn’t mean that they enjoy the process, as it’s known to be a very painful and crippling process according to scientists.

Anyway, moving on to the clip, we can see a poor goat that has unfortunately become separated from the herd. And, eagles, being the opportunistic hunters that they are, won’t let such a prime opportunity go to waste. The eagle swoops down on the unsuspecting goat with its talons ready to rip and tear. It grabs on to the goat, lifting it up and then throwing it back to the ground soon after. Unfortunately for the goat, it’s bones aren’t hollow like a cat’s, and it ends up dying on impact due to the severe height it fell from. What a way to go.

Eagles, like all predators in nature, choose their prey depending on their choice of food. They are also quite the opportunistic hunters that meticulously scan the landscape looking for weak prey that’s relatively easy to pick off. So, if a poor animal, say, a goat, happens to separate from its herd, the eagle will see it as an easier target than a goat traveling with the herd. But, just because they prefer the odds to be in their favor when they hunt doesn’t mean that eagles are weak hunters. Quite the contrary. Eagles are known to hunt prey twice as large as them, and while that might not seem as much, you need to keep in mind that an eagles preferred method to kill is to lift its prey quite high up and then drop it, crushing it.

Moving on to the clip, we can see a baby goat getting caught with no help from its parents. And, to make matters fatal, an eagle has decided to make it its prey. The baby goat, being a light and easy prey, is probably child’s play for the eagle, as it swoops down and grabs it up in the air. Despite the baby goat’s struggles, the eagle’s talons have already penetrated deep within its flesh, and trying to escape is a lost cause.

Despite eagles being opportunistic hunters, and capable of taking out prey as much as twice their size, they usually prefer hunting fish. Yep, an eagle’s diet consists primarily of fish. If we were to take a closer look at an eagle’s beak, we can see that it’s shape is like that of a pirate’s hook. This gives eagles the ability to hook fish quite efficiently. While not all eagles hunt fish as their only source of food, the steller’s sea eagle, and the african sea eagle’s diet consists primarily of fish, and not much more. But, if we were to look at the other side, in the part of the world where fish aren’t readily available, the eagles there primarily hunt large mammal carrion.

Taking a look at the clip, 3 baby warthogs can be seen walking together. Being small and relatively easy to hunt, the baby warthogs are a perfect target for the eagle, and it rushes down and pins one to the ground. After brutally driving its claws into the warthog’s flesh, the eagle scans the surroundings for any potential threats.

  1. Eagles are freaking huge, anyone else see their size compared to the wolf and the two humans there? There wasn't really a difference in size between any of them, just shaped differently but same Maas, crazy.
