I love this connection to Aladdin 😊
Back in a 1964 souvenir book, Marty Sklar wrote, “Here, the lonely ghost who seeks the companionship of 1001 restless spirits can live in a domain of illusion and imagination. There will be spine-tingling built-ins that are sure to provide new life for even the most sagging spirits: fresh cobwebs daily, wall-to-wall creaking floors, stereophonic screams, cold drafts and midnight lighting all day long – plus an endless supply of guests on whom the inventive spooks can practice individual talents, from simple scares to supernatural shockers!” It was basically marketed as a luxury retirement home for ghosts 👻😂
Besides the 18th century book 1001 Arabian nights, there was also a popular film in 1959 that starred Mr. Magoo that was called 1001 Arabian nights based on the same stories. That is likely what inspired that particular number for Walt.
It wasn’t until a much later final script that 999 (with room for 1000) became the acceptable number of ghostly inhabitants.

No matter what there’s always room for one more!
Has anyone ever counted? I’m questioning the number.
you videos always make me smile 😁
The headless knight at the end of the ride is from the old poem/ghost story Gawain and the Green Knight
I love how they worked in the 999 ghosts thing into the new haunted mansion movie, it's was a very fun little Easter egg to us haunted mansion nerds.
I still think it was a genuine pitch to restless 👻 spirits that they could actually take up residence at the attraction … Walt being unaware of course, that nearly ALL working ghosts are actually card-carrying Afterworld Union Members 😊🪦😆
Blimey, the Jack the Ripper one is rather tasteless.
Well done. I haven’t heard about this fun fact before. Thank you so much for making this short about the connection between the Haunted Mansion and Aladdin. Which one do you prefer though cartoon or live action? Mine is cartoon since I grew up with the old Disney cartoon movies.:)❤
I would always tell my dad when riding this and I still do that there would only be 998 ghost’s because one follows you home😃
The ghost host always asks for volunteers to make it 1000 and maybe there is a very long wait list but no matter how many times I say I would willingly live at the mansion I get ignored.
They need to add Walt to it as a joke cameo.
Go to the gym instead of Disney world you cow
One of the original marketing campaigns for the attraction was to showcase the fact that the expansion of the highways in the USA demolished a lot of abandoned buildings and graveyards.
