Omar's father is guilty of perpetuating his religious teachings and culture, but is also a victim of his own culture in this case, in making it acceptable to openly torture another human being for being who they are when born into this world. The whole concept of anyone feeling ok to visit their beliefs on another person is to be loathed.
    This is yet ANOTHER example of damage that religious traditions can do. It is so sad that Omar wasn't able to develop into a more emotionally balanced person. He was, sadly, a grossly maladjusted person, without tools to live in his own truth. (Same for his own parents)

  2. Is it possible that Mr. Mateen was part of the problem? I wonder if he treated his son like the golden boy of the family, and blew him full of hot air? That sort of thing teaches nothing but entitlement, and it makes it worse when you become an adult.
