For me my order is, 4. Balahara, 3. Doshaguma, 2. Rey Dau, and 1. Chatacabra.
Honestly, I loved them all, but for just the monster:
4: Doshaguma
3: Ray Dau
2: Balahara
1: Chatacabra
If we're talking their actual fight, then:
4: Chatacabra
3: Doshaguma
2: Ray Dau
1: Balahara
4th for me is Balahara great visual design mechanically simple but still a very fun to learn his weird wiggly snakey patterns. 3rd is Chatacabra, he has so much personality his so derpy I love how he sounds too, but he is a bit of a punching bag. I'd say in some cases even more than Great Jagras. Next is Doshaguma in 2nd I love Doshaguma's gameplay he's an easy early monster but he's so complex mechanically he has a lot of things in his tool set to catch your hunter unaware if you arent careful. And I like how he teaches the hunter about the importance of making as many different weakpoints in as many places of the monster as possible because of his super enrage state re-opening them later in the hunt.
Finally unsurprisingly Rey Dau is my number one monster of the beta in my opinion. There I say it I think he's a perfect monster. He has everything going for him, he is a visually stunning creature, his sounds are phenomenal he sounds so alien and haunting with his crystaline formations whistling in the wind when he flies. His colors are beautiful too, especially when he gets his fulgerite armor the bright glimmering blue accented by his yellow scales looks awesome, and my god don't even get me started on his theme song. Beautiful track for an equally beautifully designed monster. But above all else his gameplay is honestly among the best in the whole series as far as I'm concerned. Like with Doshaguma I really like how Rey Dau teaches the hunter the new mechanics of the game. First his big nuke lazer is very fair despite its oneshot potential. You WILL know when he's gonna do it because the environment gets darker all around you and you can hear Rey Dau charging it up before he shoots it. But even more importantly if you're using Focus Mode like you should be, you'll notice his face becomes a wound you can use to get a consistent super satisfying knockdown on him via Focus Striking his face. Which in turn teaches the hunter that spacing yourself properly during a tougher hunt is VERY important to keep in mind for optimal damage. Then finally his nest being a hazard you have to keep in mind later in the hunt is master class game design. Because it teaches you, that just because a monster is on its last legs doesn't mean its defenseless. You are in HIS territory and you WILL know what that means if you aren't careful. It's excellent world building and extremely smart game design to change a hunter's expectations to catch them off guard. Overall Rey Dau is a super fair monster when you take damage from him it feels like your fault as a player, and not like the game was screwing you over with crap that felt completely out of your control. Honestly I think Rey Dau might be in my top ten monsters of all time now I'm not gonna lie.
The creative sound design shines through again. I especially like it when Rey does that "Millennium Falcon hyperspace engine failing" noise. You know the one I'm talking about. So good.
@4:11 "he will deliberately run over to the nearest fcking herbivore and launch it at you as a projectile"
Hearing him swear is unusal and amusing.
Good list though. Id largely agree. Id have swapped balahara and out cute cuddly chupanibre buddy though personally. Emphasizing I agree that all 4 monsters are amazing*. It can not be stated enough that Dogishuman being "last" on this list isnt a *bad thing. Great monster. Great animations. All of these monster ooze with development "polish". His only "Downside" is that that other 3 are, imo, better.
Ill even go so far as to say Balahara is a better monster as far as "engagement" goes over Chatacabra. Watching him crawl up on the stone spires and coil around before blasting you with whatever that ick is, is visually amazing.
But I think Chatacabra is absolutely the best "first" monster weve seen in monster hunter- and really changes future expectations of the "first" monster. Yes hes easy, especially if youre not new to monster hunter and have halfa clue. But his move set is a beautiful introductory move set that really works to let you get "used" to a new weapon- and i strongly appreciate that. If youre NEW to monster hunter, and this is your first monster- hell be a great dummy to learn on. Even if youre NOT new to monster hunter, but maybe youre not familiar with all the weapons – Hes a great dummy to learn on.
And ya, rey dau on top is a no brainer. What an amazing monster that would go up with the best of the franchise as is. His moves, animations, sound, design, difficulty- all of it is perfect. The team nailed it out of the park in all regards with this monster, especially considering what he "is" in context of an open "take a look at what we have" beta.
Ray Dau is easily one of the best monsters i've ever had the pleasure of fighting, his move set, his look, and GOD his industrial-esq non organic screeching is masterclass monster design, my only hope is theirs a crazy variant of him in end game.
The hardest challenge was killing doshoguma's whole pack, no dung pods (I failed because I pulled a josh and wanted to offset kill him even after dying 2 times failing)
I wasn't able to play the beta, was it fun?
I loved hearing Rey Dau fly and roar. When I was playing my wife was literally looking around think something electrical was wrong. She says babe u hear that. My son had the microwave going and my daughter was bouncing a ballon off her finger tips. So a lot was going on and I’m like ya this monster is awesome. So I initially got in trouble for not listening lmfao (to her). So said no babe look at the tv. I’m fighting a lightning monster. She couldn’t believe it. I love this game. I can’t wait to sink 1000’s of hours playing.
I'm just gonna say it, they've been building up this rhetoric that has always been true but since world, iceborne, and rise it's been even more true, that this isn't just a boss rush game series, it's full of life and makes it seem like if these monsters existed yeah i could see it. And Im wilds they've turned this up to 11 and I'm loving it.
Mabey chatucabra will rank higher with his HR version
I didnt expect that, but I really liked Doshaguma as a hunt and as a design. Especially hunting him in a pack was a ton of fun.
Almost as much as Rey Dau. But Rey Dau design in all aspects brings it up even higher. And for the fight, while its quite fun, I just hope they make Rey Dau a bit faster at least in HR/MR, so he wouldn't just be a punching bag with an appropriate gear in a full game.
Rey got me a fair few times, BUT IN MY DEFENSE, I needed to get the timing of my Charge Blade guard points down so I could return his thunder tenfold on his ass with an SAED. And when that happened…
It made all the carts worth it.
1) Rey Dau
2) Balahara
3) Doshaguma
4) Chatacabre
0:09 that happened to me zero times
The absolute is that we have less than 10 percent of the monsters, less than 25 percent of the total maps, and no smithing yet the game is insanely addictive. Top 2 game of year 2025 if not number 1.
Rey dau sounds like a legendary pokemon
Ray Heyperdrive https://youtu.be/X-rkFaIPyL4?si=ryzDM-RH4hyjyQnz&t=6s
Still weird that Rey Dau doesn't have a clash
The screeching, no thanks
never happend gunlance for the win
For me, the answer is pretty basic:
Balahara < Chatacabra < Doshaguma < Rey Dau.
Balahara is a annoying/gimmicky fight, but still pretty easy… and doesn't have much character
Chatacabra is cool, but he is almost a medium monster than a large monster, both in size and actual fight.
Doshaguma, they have a lot of going for them, between the Pack mechanics (for example, if you fight them in a Pack and the Alpha enrages, the entire Pack enrages… but you can also individually enrage each monster of the Pack if they're sufficiently isolated), his actual moves and variety to it, plus his non-combat stuff as well… like I saw him carrying a kill to his nest to eat, it was really cool.
Rey Dau is at the top, just coz of the spectacle… he has less variety and more telegraphed moves than Dosha, and doesn't have good off-combat fun like Chad or Dosha… but the spectacle of the fight is just too good for him to not be number 1, between the rail-guns, the aerial maneuvers, the turf wars, the tri-pillar zone, and ofcourse his nest fight… It's just too good.
i found doshaguma so fun to hunt bcuz when it did enrage his wounds popped off and i took that like a deviljho challenge of aggressiveness so i took that personally and never sheathed my longsword until it was unenraged
honestly thought Balahara was much tougher than Doshaguma, not that either was very hard, but Doshaguma only felt mildly harder than chatacabra, while Balahara felt like a proper step up.
It happened to me a lot I spent a lot of time goofing around to test weapons. Especially trying to guard clash Ray Dau
i like balahara the least because they made it seem like such a herd animal with a ton of individuals everywhere, to a point where a single balahara seems kinda pathetic. they fixed this with doshaguma because of the alpha mechanic but doshaguma just feels like im fighting an ant that can only be dangerous as an army
still love him tho, the drill aesthetic is amazing
Rey dau might be up there as my favourite flying wyvern. Need to see weapons and armour before I make up my mind lol
For me personally, fight wise went Rey Dau, Doshaguma, Balahara then Chatacabra. Where as design wise I'd swap Balahara and Doshaguma around. The Rey Dau experience was just another level. That theme man.
My ranking is:
1. I only have PS5 and didn’t realize there was a beta and missed that window so I’m sad now 🙁
Josh, can we get more speculation/theory videos to hold us over till new info?
I actually didn't struggle too much with any (except Doshaguma), Chatacabre dies like a Jaggi, Doshaguma was the only one to cart me, quite a few times… whilst i was still learning the new IG, Balahara was the hunt i enjoyed most but didn't struggle much, Rey Dau kinda let me down; yeah he hits like a tank, but i thought he'd be on par with Astalos for speed, he feels like Astalos' (Sunbreak) grandfather with alot of easy telegraphed moves and forgiving safe zones (underneath him was nice and snug). My Bro who is LBG main found Rey / Balahara the worst and laughed at me as i was being beaten black and blue by 4 Doshagumas xD… and he cant even remember Chatacabre, so yeah sorry Josh
My favourite starting monster is still Seltas though <3
I actually thought up some changes for the monsters because I had the same rank.
Doshuguma needs a roar to call for his herd.
Chatacabra needs to do like water blight with his tongue or a leaping attack or something.
Balahara I actually liked a lot it felt the most complete to me
Rey needs a follow up to the wing swipe. It just felt like it would have that move
0 but I was use bow and the npc hunters to help lol
I personally can't wait to fight Tarkarkos and Lala Burina to extinction just for their respective armor sets
i would love chatacabra eating some mutagen like the turtles and grow and be the final boss of the game. tetsucabra could come chill too.
fir me it happened inverse like I thought I wouldn't like chatacabra or dosaguma as mucho, but for mi is balajara, rey, doshaguma, chatacabra
Weirdly he never once hit me with his lightning cannon. The thing that carted me more than once was that back flip move he does hitting you with his tail.
Rey dau's roar inda sounds like gogmazios turning yk. Hopefully they reuse some of those sound assets..? (Pls bring gog back)
Honestly Rey Dau is amazing and I feel like he’s very otherworldly almost alien like with the mandible like horns that fold into his railgun, his screeching roar, and the fact he only appears during the Sandtide just give him this otherworldly alien vibe that I love
Day Day 5 of counting "this changes everything" in the title
