This September, we are trying to do more succession planting and interplanting. Where we first grew borage in early spring, we then replaced with corn, and now are replacing with brassicas. In another garden bed, we have replaced cilantro with corn, and now with brussels sprouts and more cilantro. Earlier in the season, we grew onions and garlic in a bed, but then replaced with bush beans. We are patiently waiting for the okra to stop producing in order to grow green onions and broccoli there. In our concrete bed, we had fennel, Okinawan spinach, and lettuce growing in winter through spring, and have now sown radishes, carrots, and volunteering sunflowers. Our yard long beans and okra are slowing in production, and our Armenian cucumber vines are loaded with powdery mildew, causing a decrease in production. We are taking down the Armenian cucumber plant, and finding places for winter crops. We’re enjoying the last of summer blooms such as the candy stripe cosmos and lavender zinnias. Meanwhile, the canna lilies are blooming as well as the pineapple sage, which are drawing in the hummingbirds. Check out this video for what is changing at Serenity Garden this month, and garden with us.
