A King County Metro driver was fatally stabbed onboard the bus he was driving in Seattle’s University District early Wednesday morning.
Seattle police said officers responded to a reported stabbing near the 4100 block of University Way Northeast, which is located close to the University of Washington campus. Detectives said the 59-year-old driver was stabbed in the chest and made it a few steps to a nearby alley, where he collapsed.
Seattle Fire Department medics arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
During a press conference Wednesday morning, members of Amalgamated Transit Union 587 identified the driver as Shawn Yim. ATU 587 President Greg Woodfill said Yim was well-known and well-loved at Metro. Yim worked at Metro since 2015.
The last time a King County Metro bus driver was killed while on the job was in November 1998.
Seattle police said a passenger on the bus got into a physical altercation with Yim at the intersection of 15th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 41st Street.
The SPD said officers and King County Sheriff’s Office deputies were still searching for the suspect as of 11 a.m. Wednesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of our Brother Shawn Yim. It is a very sad and difficult day for our members,” said Woodfill. “Shawn’s tragic murder in the line of duty is unacceptable. Our bus drivers deserve to be able to go to work and come home safely each day. It is long overdue for King County Metro to make real changes to ensure our members and riders are safe on our buses, at bus stops and at transit centers.”

I've been riding the bus over 25 years, have seen, reported and experienced numerous incidents. Most of the passengers are fine but I would not say the rides are generally safe. Disruptive behavior happens constantly.
First and foremost my heart goes out to the wife and the family of this man who's life was taken! With that said;
