Melodic Death Metal vs Metalcore (Feat. Markus Vanhala of INSOMNIUM & OMNIUM GATHERUM)

This time around, I’m joined by Markus Vanhala of the bands Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum to trade some riffs and compare Melodic Death Metal to the Melodic variety of Metalcore (which is directly inspired by the 90’s Melodic Death Metal scene). I’ve been planning to do this video with Markus since December of last year, but him being such a busy person, it took a long time to get it done properly. We finally made it happen and I’m really happy with it. Hope you enjoy it (I also dig that Markus showed off by using a different guitar for every clip hehe).
Mix and master done by myself too.
I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE MUSIC. Please support the bands in any way you can.

  1. The best part about the melocore selection here is almost all of them had albums produced by Killswitch Engage's guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. The only full exception here is Darkest Hour — never worked with him. And Parkway Drive and August Burns Red songs here aren't from the albums produced by Adam.

I think it's safe to say that the man singlehandedly built the American scene of melodic* metalcore

  2. Speaking of special places: my first gateways to extreme metal were exactly Insomnium (exactly Shadows Of The Dying Sun album) from the melodeath camp and Bullet From My Valentine (surprised you haven't included it) from the melocore one

  3. Is it just me or does Markus kinda look like John Travolta in the thumbnail? 🙃😆
Anyways, awesome collab. You as well as Markus have played a very good choice of Melodic Death Metal and Metalcore 🎸🔥🤘 greetings from Lotasticland

  4. I think it's funny that Markus picks really famous songs that everyone knows and you are resorting to picking alot of deep cuts that the bands don't even play live. Like KSE would ever play Reject Yourself live lol.

  5. Let's not look past the fact that you chose the great early wave of metalcore for your picks. Definitely had some great riffage and song writing in those days.
