Meet the inheritor of Ju Ci – an ancient art of 'stapling' broken pieces of ceramic back together

Tong Weicheng, a seemingly ordinary man from the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang, is currently the representative inheritor of Ju Ci, mainly engaged in preserving the art of Ju Ci.

Ju Ci, an ancient Chinese method of fixing broken ceramics with tiny staples, has existed since the period of Southern and Northern Dynasties (420 – 589 AD).

The word Ju first appeared in Yu Pian by Gu Yewang of the Southern Liang Dynasty. According to the book, the explanation of Ju is ‘coating with iron’, which means using metal to fix the broken pieces of ceramic back together.

The most amazing thing about Ju Ci is that the broken ceramic or porcelain can be repaired with just a few nails, and no use of glue at all.
