  1. So, first off unfortunately the Hijikata ep is another filler. It's a really funny filler, one of the best, but its filler.

Second the arc you are entering is based on an old Japanese myth of the Ryugo Palace (it's really hard to spell.) Essentially the myth goes like this:

One day a man saves a turtle from a bunch of bullies on the beach and releases the turtle back into the ocean. The next day the man meets the turtle and it wishes to reward him by taking him to the great undersea palace. There he parties for 3 days? (the amount of time varies depending on who is telling) and falls in love with the princess, Otohime. She wishes that he'd stay with her at the palace, but he left his family behind and feels he needs to check on them. She asks again that he stay, and he insists on going. So she gives him a box, and tells him it will bring him luck, but he should not open it. He returns home to learn that time moves differently in the palace, and in the three days 300 years have passed. The community is gone, everything is gone. In despair he opens the box, and his body ages 300 years on the spot. It's… a fucked up folktale.

It's a story that a LOT of anime reference (One Piece basically peels the whole thing out in the Fishman Island arc) and Gintama really goes balls to the walls both telling the tale and making fun of it. (Like the turtle being a pervert and the bully being Kagura, and him not being saved, but beaten until he agrees to take the three in exchange for his life.) But also the scene with Shinpachi that also references Lost (that movie you guys were thinking of) is a direct parallel to that exact same type of story (leaves home for an extended period and returns to find everything gone.) Also the aging up of Gin and Katsura is tied to the magic box they found, which is literally given the same name (which I'm not gonna risk spelling wrong here.) It's a Really off the wall and funny arc.

I dunno why viewers are going down, but probably folks are waiting for Yoshiwara in Flames which is coming soon.

  2. I'm sorry, I try to leave a comment on everything but sometimes I'm just super busy with life, haha.
Anyways, what this arc is referencing is Ryugu-jo island. A underwater kingdom that has a variety of folktales from various cultures. Some saying it's ruled by a sea dragon and such, most with the belief that a Turtle will carry you on its back to the kingdom beneath the sea that's full of riches. The arc will get there, they always do,.
