missed it live, about incorrect inventory, after too many years in retail the problems are fewer but those that remain cause the problems for inventory , here are the causes in brief, imagin i run a large multi product store, and i sell boxed kits. fails by number, I order10 Godzilla kits, 1, due to a bar code error i recieve 8 Godzilla 12" anc 2 Godzilla 8" , computer shows 10 12" kits but I have 8. or 2, 10 kits arrive correctly but 1 is damaged, the kit is sidelined along with other damaged stock for price reduction or waste, due to insurance process the reduction or waste is done bi weekly or monthly meaning until wasted the computer sees 10 kits not 9 kits and a waste. 3stock control error, a delivery of 10 Godzilla arrive over 10 assorted boxes, 1 box is accidentally mislocated or is left on delivery , comp says 10, you can lay hands on 9, later the missed box is found/redelivered and scanned , you now have 10 but comp says 11. these usually happen in multi store outlets where stock variance of upto 10% is accepted, the last 3 are down to customers and account for stock control problems . 4 the sadly still prevelent THEFT, i worked selling wine, comp and Mk1 Eyeball told me we had 60 bottles of Shiraz on the shelf, we sold none then a customer wanted all 60. when i went to box them there were only 58, no breakages, 2 stolen, if not for the order it could have been weeks before i knew. 5, Lazy, customer picks up Godzilla, takes it round store then changes mind, instead of handing to staff or returning to correct spot, they stow it behind shelf full of "my little baby" dolls, now in a week i sell 9 Godzilla and 0 dolls, computer says Ihave 1 Godzilla left, shelf and warehouse say 0. 6, 11 am i have 2 GODZILLA on the shelf, comp agrees, mick phones up wanting 1, Isay I have 2 and he travels to store, in te meantime Janis picks up both as gifts for the twins, and carries on shopping, mick arrives , shelf is empty but comp says 2 in stock as comps cant see into carts, if Janis goes to checkout mick may be able to make a deal ending in comp and stock matching, BUT if Janis does 5 then comp will show 2 while Mk1 eyeball shows 0, if i then zero comp an order another 10, i am going to have 12 and messed up inventories. sounds absurd but with product change I have personaly experienced all 6 as has anyone in retail, and they are all the bane of shopkeeper/workers lives, and thats defore you get to the nightmare of walmart etc and their 1990s based bolt on computer systems and interational comp chaos, ( uk store comp keeps deleting and ordering stock, dicovered monday 9 am , cant be reported until 3pm for time differences, email and calls means tech dept in USA gets to it Thursday fix applied two weeks after first report, result, by time fixed, original 20% skock error is now as much as 100% errant. again from experience and far from rare.
