  1. I don't understand why did you pick gauss over hand phasors. You will never be able to fit it on small ship, it's one of the most sizable weapons in the game, even after lots of miniaturisation it will be impossible. Your hand to hand weapon however is extremely lacking, jumping from +5 to +25 is huge and holds much more value than researcbing a weapon that you won't be able to use.

  2. It is true that no matter how big the defender defense advantage is versus the attack level, all weapons have at least a 5% probability of hit.

    However, it is not true that weapons will never hit more than 95% of the time. If the attack level is 5 levels or more above the defender defense level, the weapon will hit 100% of the time. For beam/bomb weapons, the greater the attack level advantage over 5 the greater the expected (average) damage. However, the weapon damage will never exceed its maximum damage rating.

    This is explained in the game manual (paper version) which I still have. Yes, I bought the game when it originally came out over 30 years ago.

One "bug"? that alwas frustrated me was the fact that because the resolution for this game is so low, situations where more than one enemy fleet icons are stacked graphically on top of one another seem to happen way too often. Inability to click on fleet icons directly under other fleet icons can mean the difference between keeping a colony and losing one.

  4. Around 1h26m you said we did not have much success spying on the bugs. That was due to not having a spy. It was 1y to get the next spy. I would have stayed on trying, there is no reason to keep checking on everyone, as you are not going be able to do anything with that information right away. Better to try to get a steal imo.
