Part 2 of my 3 part series about Mars Colonization. Many well known scientists and celebrities believe that colonizing Mars is impossible. Here’s seven of their naysayer arguments that just don’t hold any water.

Sign me up, I am mechanically inclined so saying that I will be useful is an understatement.
These mars sceptic scientists just don't want us to know that's where they go for their holidays
Why don’t we just undo the damage we have already done to our own home planet ?????
We are not going to a place we can't breath..wake up to yourself people
How do we plan on getting there, it takes a minimum of 9 months to get to Mars. If we want to get to mars in our lord and saviour Elon Musks way people would lose a huge amount of muscle mass and bone density on the trip there. Even with Mars gravity it would take at least a few weeks for astronauts to get to work by the time they’ve landed. Also people aren’t just worried about the health hazards of Martian soil but also its tendency to fuck up machines. Rovers on Mars are relatively simple in terms of moving parts so robots could wear down way quicker and with the Hohmann transfer window coming round every two years we’re going to need a lot of spare parts with us. That’s not to mention the fact that if there were a disaster at the base like a fire or serious leak the astronauts aren’t going to be in a good place in terms of rescue. They either wait for their rocket to fuel up using the soil or they wait a couple years for rescue. You also seem to be ignoring a lot of the human aspects. Underground or not an early colony with a small crew of let’s say 10-15 on a planet so far away for 2 years with no real options for return are going to be kicked in the arse by mental health. Mars is undeniably harsh for human life. I’m not saying Mars colonisation is impossible and I’d love to see it happen but I don’t believe the gung ho way daddy Elon is approaching this is wise. We need to fully plan so the colony is already sizeably large enough to be like what you describe with a series of large habitats so there is redeundacy and some level of self sufficiency long before we risk human lives there.
Good video. Also need to keep in mind increased numbers of meteors and such reaching the surface due to the very thin atmosphere and proximity to the asteroid belt.
I'm thinking this guy was the science advisor for the aliens from "Signs"
Oh YEAH!
We are already working on a solution to perchlorate as it contaminates ground water on earth. Pub Med.gov has an abstract of a study titled Molecular analysis of a perchlorate reductase from a perchlorate-respiring bacterium Perc1ace.
Biosphere 1+2 both failed under ideal conditions. One failed by insect infestation, the other by not understanding interaction between air and rich soil. It's criminally irresponsible to send people to Mars without solving every long term problem with habitation. Current attitude is any problem can be solved, and are quickly forgotten. Escape pods capable of returning to earth should be a standard minimum like lifeboats are regulated today.
You listen to this Guy we will never explore anything.
Theres nothing on Mars that doesnt already exist on Earth in superior quantities
Don’t give 2 💩💩 about Bill Nye and anything he says
Why are we saying that Elon Musk is a physicist? He has a batchelors degree in physics… but that's it. He only has an undergrad level of education in the discipline.
The man is a venture capitalist. That's it. He has money that he invests in companies. Some of his investments are interesting, but lets not pretend that he's a visionary who either invented or discovered anything.
I've read that you could solve ALL of the difficulties establishing a Martian colony by watching Youtube videos and reading the suggestions in the comment section.
Perchlorates, perchlorates, perchlorates. Gamma rays, Gamma rays, Gamma rays. Temperature, temperature, temperature.
Where do you get enough energy from to solve your problems, build your systems and protect yourself from the environment?
All very well burbling on about things when you're not quantifying problems. What do you do when the stuff forms ALL of the regolith all over the Planet.
There is no reason to colonize Mars. Anymore than there is a reason to want to colonize Antarctica or the Marianas trench. We have permanent research facilities in places inhospitable to human life, including space. However, the scientist do not live there permanently. It is not a "colony" in the traditional sense. There will never be a human colony "off the Earth" until doing so is easier or more beneficial than living here on Earth.
The future of human life in the universe, I think, is that we will achieve technology capable of creating environments to support us wherever we choose to live and in doing so we will find that creating vast habitats in space for us to live is the best way to preserve the natural environments on the planets we come to know.
I believe the future of humanity to be a spacefaring civilization that has the smallest possible footprint on any planet within its sphere of influence.
Space is where it's at, baby! Not on the surface of planets where we dont belong.
No colonization of Mars is possible without Gravity control. Period, look up gravity effects. End of line.
Yo the Hab unit you showed between points 4 and 5 were beautiful, I’d love to live in something like that.
I would definitely go but one thing I am discombobulated with 1 third of gravitational pull how would such a landslide be so close to the speed of sound. I get 8 km.high
You know when I want heart surgery, I talk to my dentist! That's why Elon Musk is so important here about Mars. Just getting to the planet based on its distant between planets will take up to 2 years.
Next, our mental state is critical here. The first small group will have these mental problems of loneliness. This is true when your on a red dirt world with NO green.
Yes, the atmosphere is so weak, radiation will be terrible here. That radiation danger will happen just being on the ship to Mars (or the return trip). Also, waiting two years to go back to Earth will be suicidal because of this radiation!
Perchlorate is the baloney topic here.
Wait a minute. This angry astronaut must have forgotten the 6 month sand storms that do exist!
What happened to those biodome experiments we had on Earth? Oh, they failed!
Even if the perchlorates can be used, they are still poisonous.
Bill Nye is supposed to be a scientist and these are not obstacles but challenges to scientists. Space is full of such challenges that scientists would be excited to study, That is how scientists work. They literally want to colonize Mars, Venus, etc because they are scientists. The only objection they have is don't take the money from their project.
Great informative video. I am so sick of these celebrity scientists that have an agenda. The "spend our resources to keep Earth safe" crowd. There is no reason why you can't do both, protect Earth and colonize Mars.
Virtually you can live almost anywhere, but the cost to build a habitat on Mars surface, is more expensive then building a habitat in Mars underground. First of all, the resources are underground and not on surface. No matter what happen on earth, earth is going to be 1000%times better then mars
We mite make it to mars but we won't have the radiation shielding technology for many more decades, if ever. GCR will Swiss cheese all cellular entities in no time flat.
Bill Nye (the engineering degree guy) is COMPLETELY unqualified and nearly always wrong about every topic he weighs in on. He has become a leftist political activist. NOT a scientist.
Bill Nye and NDT make a good point when they point out that Mars is way more inhospitable than Antarctica. You really didn't answer that point well. Sure there are winds in Antarctica but that's a lot easier to deal with than lack of air or radiation on Mars or just the distance. And Antarctica is a whole continent so I am sure it has plenty of nice views and interesting places.
The thing is, engineering and economics are much harder than you think. It's much easier to think of something than to actually do it. I can think of giant underwater domed cities, or farms in Sahara that are watered with giant nuclear desalination plants. I can also argue why it's possible to do those things. The thing is that they are not done because of real engineering and economic reasons.
Mars is for "martians" ….and that´s the ONLY reason we can´t find a single martian out there 🤗
Interesting stuff, but I've yet to read a compelling argument to colonize Mars. Unmanned missions are approaching $3B per mission. A manned mission would be a hell of a lot more. Estimates are from $50B to $100B per mission. We're not even talking about colonizing. That's just a "let's see if we can get there" mission. Better off spending that money developing clean energy on earth.
Man I like to get my hands in the drugs you're doing
NDT and others are working for our Alien overlords who want to keep a angry punch of primates on earth 😂🤫
This won't age well)
I like Billneil De grasse Nyetyson
Where the link to radiation?
"nothing else first of all as you can see we can build habitats on mars that are pretty pleasant to live in but on top of that there are all kinds of activities that you can perform on mars that you really can't do on earth for example one-third g basketball can you imagine"
It's embarrassing that people to listen to this. And applaud it. They have not built one of these on Earth. None of these machines have been built. And of course, the scientists are wrong! Angry and his HS diploma know better. All you have to do is make Elon content. For you who are not sure. Any discussion of colonizing Mars is Elon content. And cash in. This is his job now. SMH.
Much as I love Elon and I cant wait to get my Tesla, I dont believe Mars is habitable. No atmosphere to speak of , radiation (from Sun) off the scale, soil so abrasive it tears the Mars rovers wheels to shreds. More , gravity 0.4g , once people adapt to Mars gravity their children will never be able to return to Earth.
However there is one thing that will kill everyone. (I first read this in a scifi storey.)
On Earth our biology is so integrated and dependent on the ecosystem around us that we are not aware how much we depend on the microbiome we will in. For a whole pile of reasons any microbiome that is planned for Mars is doomed.
Tyson is a blowhard. Try listening to start talk now, all he does is over talk his guests, interrupts them tells some joke then closes out by lowering his voice and saying something deep. You can’t learn much of anything from his show anymore
One of your best clips! Keep em coming.
Main problem is the loss of bone density on the journey … no astronaut will arrive on Mars in a functioning capacity
Anyone ever stop to think about reproduction? WTF will our offspring be like??? Care for the elderly? It's all so stupid and wildly impractical. And to those that see this as a way to escape problems we have on Earth, here's a newsflash: the problem is us…human nature.
I am pretty sure that Elon was talking about taking his boring machine to Mars and boring tunnels to live underground…..maybe you should research your subject a bit better before you go take the subject off into right field….
I spent the last 30 years next to an Air Force base. The local drinking water was contaminated with Perchlorate (and other chemicals). (I think the ground water near every Air Force base in the US is contaminated.) So I don't have a thyroid and I'm on Synthroid for it. So what. Send Synthroid to Mars.
You are one Crazy Galoot , Angry ,lol ! At least You are NOT a MAD Scientist ,lol ! Your programs are pretty good though ,lol !
Phony Stark is a fraud and a sociopathic conman. In a year you'll all be going you knew…. lol
Very doubtful that will ever colonize Mars or any planet in the solar system, we'll just sit here on Earth being complacent until the next Cosmic disaster wipes our species out
