Marie de Medici was the second woman from the social-climbing Italian banking family to marry into French royalty. After a decade of quarrels with her husband’s mistress, Marie was released from her miserable marriage when Henri IV was assassinated while stuck in traffic. Marie became regent for her young son, Louis XIII. But as he grew into manhood, Marie refused to share power. Mother and son engaged in an epic and bloody power struggle which resulted in the Queen mother being convicted of treason and expelled from France. She stayed with her daughter, Henrietta Maria, Queen of England and tried to get her son in Law, Charles I to ally with her other sons in law, the King of Spain and Duke of Savoy against Louis. But they refused to escalate the family drama into war. One of the most horrible mothers in history died alone and destitute in the home of an artist. Let’s explore the staggering rise and fall of Marie de Medicis, Queen of France.

  3. Three violent rebellions??? Jeez, her son had a tremendous amount of patience for his awful mother. Totally understandable why she ended up totally isolated from all her illustrious royal children. What king or queen in their right mind would want to keep this quarrelsome woman around?

  4. Please don't endorse the myth that corsets were uncomfortable or torture devices. When properly made and designed for the wearer, they gave excellent support, much better than modern bras. Other than that, I enjoyed the video.

  5. So Marie Di Medici Had A Hand In The Assassination Of Her Husband Henri(Henry)IV Of France?! I Wouldn't Be Surprised. A Real Medici,She Must Have Been POWER Hungry,So She Couldn't Have POWER As Queen Consort,So She Would Gain POWER As Queen Mother Over Her Son King Louis XIII, Until He Came Of Age,And Had Her Imprisoned For TREASON,A Very Fascinating Story,Talk About A Horrible Mother!!! 🧐🤨😠😡🤬

  6. So Marie Di Medici Was The Cause Of The FRONDE, The Rebellion Gaston,Duc Of Orleans Against His Elder Brother King Louis XIII. Which Is Why In Direct Opposition The Next Queen Consort, Anne Of Austria Effeminized Her Younger Son,Phillippe,Duc Of Orleans So He Wouldn't Be A Threat To His Elder Brother, King Louis XIV!!!

  7. With family and friends like that, I would be very interested in opra.

So many women who died in childbirth. So many children died in infancy. That's just a constant.

    And inbreeding didn't help.

  8. Not a corset stays or a pair of bodies made with cord NOT baline they where there to support not squish as you put it. Women were more than capable of doing EVERYTHING whilst wearing one there was even a sports bra version-jumps so yeah please don’t perpetuate the myth so you can get sponsorship

  9. Had no idea corsets or stays could be so incredibly divisive lol.. I would sigh but I fear my stays with laces and whalebone piping have caused severe lack of oxygen.. may need a good laudanum tonic and a nap..if only I could bend down to reach it.

Only joking- don’t come for me ladies. Love all the discourse and as someone with horrible upper back problems y’all
might be on to something ❤

    Great video as usual!

  10. Nooooo Lindsay don't spread the false information about corsetry!!!!!! How do you think working women wore the corsets for decades? They're shockingly comfortable if you get a properly made one that actually fits…

  11. I don’t think I’ve ever left a comment on your page but this has to be said
It’s one thing to be paid by an advertiser and state your opinion (corsets COULD be uncomfortable and I wouldn’t want to wear one). It’s another issue entirely to be wrong about historical garments and perpetuate more myths about them just because you’re getting paid. Your whole page is about history, you couldn’t have taken two seconds to link or shout out another YouTuber (Bernadette Banner, Morgan Donner, etc) who talk extensively about the history of fashion as a segway into your ad? Seriously?

  12. So biased ! She wasn’t a traitor nor a bad mother. She had an extremely unfaithful husband. We don’t know about his death, until now. And it’s way too easy and sexist to blame her. She cried a lot on his deathbed. Also she was a good stateswoman, she spent a lot but it was what was needed at that time for France. Not to speak about how she was an amazing patron of the arts. Accounts about her as a mother were highly exaggerated to make her look bad. So there is a lot of false info out there. It’s some of the people she trusted who were jealous of her son Louis XIII and exploited this trust to harm him. She has always hated the people whom she suspected of betraying her son Louis XIII. Like Richelieu who she judged had betrayed her, she did not trust him around her son Louis XIII
