Man shot by deputies in South Carolina sues sheriff's office

The York County Sheriff’s Office is facing a lawsuit from a man who was shot by deputies outside his home two years ago during a mental health emergency.

Trevor Mullinax, a Rock Hill resident, filed the lawsuit in York County court on Friday around two years after the incident happened in May 2021. Mullinax and his family will hold a news conference on Tuesday to address the situation and release video footage of the incident to the public.

On May 7, 2021, Mullinax says police were called to his property on E Highway 324 near Rock Hill as he was experiencing a mental health crisis. During the situation, Mullinax’s mother was consulting him while he was sitting in his truck.

Deputies arrived in at least four vehicles and immediately walked toward Mullinax’s truck and yelled for him to show his hands, as seen in the bodycam video. Seconds later, deputies began firing shots at Mullinax, who was hit nine times and shot at almost 50 times, according to the lawsuit.

  1. My God, this is incompetence incarnate smh .I hope that the family sues the bejeezus out of the sheriff’s dept. The family obviously was looking for some actual HELP in this situation and the GOON SQUAD was sent instead. This is a perfect example of why you better think a second or third time before you call 911 to bring a cop on the scene cuz they can make a situation even worser than it is.

You see, this is what is meant when people talk about “ defunding the police “ not what some people WANT you to think . It’s about taking funds from popo depts like this and putting it into a dept which sends out people trained to actually HELP in mental health crises like this man was having instead of ESCALATING the situation . It’s the old “ if the only tool you have is a hammer then everything you encounter looks like a nail” thing . These cops obviously were not trained in either mental health crises or deescalation but only in “ the way of the gun.”

Let the cops have enough money to fight actual crime, definitely — that’s not what “ defunding the police “ is about— but don’t send them to situations like this. Instead, put some of that “ everything looks like a nail” money into sending people into situations like these who can actually make the situation better instead of worse .

They think there getting away with there crimes, when in reality they're storing up wrath for themselves.

  3. That is some of the worst reporting I have ever seen. Neither of the "journalists" are able to speak coherently nor do they convey the story. Meanwhile the background footage is just repetitive shots of a police car and ambulance. Completely worthless.

  5. This doesn't show anything. If the actual video isn't clear enough to show a shotgun I don't know how a judgement can be made. I hope the true and actual video gets used. This is just a bad edit
