Ed and his crew have made many Zombies at Distortions, but nothing like this. Creative Director Russell Brown, from the computer software company Adobe, has ordered a giant Zombie head to act as his podium for his upcoming creative conference in Denver, ADIM 13. Jordu is asked to sculpt this epic piece and almost has a heart attack when he realizes the scale he needs to work in. Ed thinks it should be “easy”. But that word jinxes the whole process and turns the Zombie head project into a nightmare. Hopefully the blood, sweat and tears is all worth it in the end. The Distortions team also has to recreate the 1930’s classic Laughing Sal attraction into a male version called Laffing Hal. The piece demands a laugh track, which falls to Ed to record. Not wanting to loop the same laugh over and over again, making it repetitive, Ed’s funny bone and vocal chords, are put to the test. As if all this wasn’t enough to deal with, Ed and his team also need to make an illusion piece for a client in Phoenix. Using an old mirror trick, they will make a man’s body look like he’s floating in mid air, hanging on a spike. This, however, proves more difficult than expected since this mirrored piece will be on display at a tradeshow instead of in a very controlled environment. Will they be able to work the illusion with people approaching from all directions? With a little help from Jordu illustrating the concept, the build goes smoothly. And as long as the mirrors don’t break during shipping, everything should be… easy… Right?
Hidden in an industrial warehouse in Greeley, Colorado. Distortions Unlimited’s owners, Ed and Marsha Edmunds, and their talented crew make monsters. Their quality props, masks and creations have been a mainstay of the dark amusement industry since 1978. Long creative hours are spent in gray-walled offices with brain-eating hunchbacks, wall-scaling zombies and docile 3-foot tall aliens. The working environment looks more like a nightmare factory than a place of business, these men and women invite you to for a behind the scenes look at how they create some of the scariest animatronics in the haunt industry.
