Mailbag Show: Derek Carr is Gone!

We’re back for our coverage of the Las Vegas Raiders and our weekly Raider Nation mailbag show. Lots of questions/comments about Derek Carr and is future in the Silver and Black, grinding of teeth over Josh McDaniels and worry about fans at Allegiant Stadium and frustration grows with Darren Waller inside the Raiders organization

  1. I totally agree with the Gruden & Mayock drafts killing this team. .. I told my 50 yr Raider buddies before this season it will take Ziegler 2 yrs to fix this roster.

  2. Have you guys even watched the route running by the backup WRs? Horrible! Uninspired play by the backup WRs. Just watch. Carr has been off this year, but the WRs other than Adams have been aweful.

  3. Four points…
<1> Why is everyone going on like this was a great team, and it's now a terrible team? if just 6 plays go for us, then we could be 8-1… we are 2-1 in games that were definitively won, and 0-6 in "coin-flip" games. If Butler falls on the fumble that Webb punched out, instead of trying to scoop it up, then we beat the Colts… he didn't and we lost – it's that fine a margin. We have scored more and conceded less than the Chargers – but they're 5-4, and we're 2-7. If a team isn't truly elite or totally dreadful, then their record is largely defined by the roll of the dice… the same team could play the same season multiple times and finish anywhere between 6-11 and 11-6, but we will declare the 11-6 team to be great, and the 6-11 team to be awful (because you are what your record says!)… same team, same talent, different luck – that's all it is. We had all the luck last year (it's not normal to go 4-0 in OT), and none of the luck this year – it's just unfortunate.
The target is to become like the Chiefs and Bills, they're significantly better than most of their opponents, so they can take the bad dice rolls and still win games – they can take the good and bad coin-flips and it only changes whether they finish 15-2 or 11-6. The Raiders are not there yet, they just had a lucky season last year… but we were sold on the idea that we were just about to get there, which is why we're now so angry.
Caveat – yes… leadership, team spirit, grit, "balls" etc. all effect whether the "coin-flips" are more or less likely to go in your favor – McDaniels seems to have none of these things… which brings me to…
<2> Gruden got more leeway than McD because we knew, despite all the awful personnel decisions, that he was a "leader of men" – a lot of us have decided that we're done with McD after half a season as he just doesn't appear to have the personality to be a good HC, however long he's given – I'm sure that he can improve a bit, but if it's just not in him then it can't be added. Contrast the two HCs in the last game – it took all of ONE minute of Saturday opening his mouth, for him to be a better leader than McD – he inspired and fired up his team… McD seems to do the opposite.
<3> Completely agree with your assessment of the team, except that we have far more than just Nate Hobbs in the backfield – Ya Sin is good, Harmon is good, Webb is promising… sure Averette has been inexplicably awful, and Moehrig seems lost… but it would be a decent enough backfield if we had more than one player pressuring the QB!
Again though (having accepted that Gruden's drafting was awful) this all comes back as a negative on keeping McD & Ziegler – the limitations were crystal clear to everyone… they had money and options were out there to strengthen the OL and the DT rooms, and they did nothing – inexcusable!
<4> 2023 isn't a great QB class – there's one good one – Young – and there are questions about whether he can physically stand up to playing in the NFL.

  4. Watch the all 22. I did. The whole sloppy thing. This isn’t Carr’s fault. There are so many missed blocks, bad play calls, missed assignments, etc. Players making mistakes on every play, over and over again. Even Adams blocking is horrible at times. Deforest Buckner was blowing up our 0-line too.

  5. Jones, wasted time & money.
When a team is up 17 points and doesn't pull it off, nah. No excuses.
You don't let up, you drive insult into injury without mercy.
With this kind of talent there is no need to bring in a new system. Maybe a few changes but why add chaos and assume it will be helpful, When these guys were already playoff caliber as far as talent.

  6. Conley was a Reggie McKenzie pick not Gruden. It all starts with Mark Davis. He hired McKenzie who had horrible FA signings and draft picks and then hired Gruden and Mayock who did even worse. So what makes everyone so sure that the Mark Davis hiring of Ziegler and McDaniels is going to be any different???

  7. Just like you said to tua had different coordinators to start his career when he first started he didn't start off so hot now he has a different coordinator that he understands and look how good he's doing. Give him his first coordinator when he first started and he probably goes back to looking like crap. I think car doesn't fit McDaniels system even though he should. In the third year with John gruden car looked like a MVP in the first three games look like he was really getting it down. So if they do decide to keep car which I doubt I think next season he'll play a lot better it usually takes him about a season to get the playbook down

  8. They would restructure cause that means they get more money right now up front.. what player wouldn’t do that? Kelce talked about it on his podcast.. I’m paraphrasing but he said anytime the office goes to him and asks all he thinks is more money now and we have a chance to get better..

  9. Nothing new – I fully expect Denver to beat the Raiders. They're more desperate.

Raider ownership has already excused their coach for losing; as far as I know, Denver has not.

  10. In your response to Vic Romero I think you actually prove his point when you mentioned Tua in a new system. It’s not that the system is new to Carr it’s that the coaching is bad and the system not acclimated to his players. If the coaching and system integration were good Carr wouldn’t be having these issues.

  11. It took carr 4 years in grudens offense to finally ride jacobs back into the playoffs last year. This is his first year in mds system and he looks like a rookie. And everyone wants to compare this season to last but that team had been together for 4years. Cares stat pad is melting under the truth of the sun

  12. Am tellin you guys the problem is
Josh McDaniels and his staff , & mark davis is too dam scared to do anything , cause if he replaces McDaniels it will show he is an IDIOT when it comes to hiring Head Coachs. The players can only do so much and if McDaniels
is pulling the strings on what
Carr & the offense can do thinking he is Belichick then he better thonk again.

  13. Mark Davis should have just made Rich Bisaccia head coach. Fired Greg Olsen & re-hired Bill Musgrave for offensive coordinator & kept defensive coordinator Gus Bradley. We also keep our defensive lineman. Re-sign Yannick Nkgoue, Carl Nassib, Quinton Jefferson, Gerald McCoy, Darius Philon, &, Solomon Thomas.

  14. JOSH MCDANIELS & DAVE ZIEGLER MUST RESTRUCTURE EVERYBODY THAT HAS A BIG CONTRACT & GIVE THEM ALL PAY CUTS. SO WE CAN SIGN GAME CHANGERS ON DEFENSE. DEREK CARR, DAVANTE ADAMS, HUNTER RENFROW, DARREN WALLER, KOLTON MILLER, CHANDLER JONES, &, MAXX CROSBY ALL NEED TO RESTRUCTURE THERE CONTRACTS & TAKE BIG PAY CUTS. SO WE CAN IMPROVE OUR DEFENSE & OFFENSIVE LINE THROUGH FREE AGENCY & THE NFL DRAFT.
