I like all your videos. Your idea of using them like a trailer to a longer video is a great idea. Permit fees for Joe Average to make YouTube videos is just wrong. Permits like that should be for big-money film companies, not the average person.
Some of the places I've visited and would like to visit are from videos I watched on Youtube. If I don't see something I'm interested in, I'm not as likely to visit. It's like free advertising for those areas. Why would the NPS not want that? The less people visit, the less funding they're likely to get to improve those areas.
I was always told public land belongs to us, the People. I see more and more that government wants to keep us off 'their' land. I grew up near a National Park, and everybody took still pictures, and video when that became available.
While I agree a large production company should have to get permits I strongly think any individual is simply exercising his/her 1st amendment to the constitution rights by videoing anything they can see from or in a public area. While you were talking early on I was thinking "somebody has to challenge this at the supreme court level". They the parks should just have a rule where a production company of more then 10-12 people (most are 75 or more) have to get permits. 9 or less no permit needed. because they, the larger production comp. are disruptive and should pay for that disruption. Example===I am visiting a whatever historic place, tour bus is there for 1 hour, Large production Co. has me stopped from going here or there for 3 hours. I don't get to see anything====They need to pay to rent that area and I am informed of that rental B 4 I pay to get on tour bus. I'm still hissed but I understand the park making money for better upkeep too.
As a small channel just starting out, shorts have really helped my number of subscribers to grow. You can also take a snippet of existing videos and remix them into a short which is nice.
So sad about the permits/processing fees for national park lands. That land is owned by the citizens of this country. It's all about sucking in as much money as possible. The gov't stealing from the very folks who own it. It's criminal. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Your vids are enjoyable to watch :>).
This dictatorship is getting out of control. Alot of youtubers are being affected by this stupid law. They want you to pay for a permit to do everything. Thats not exactly a free country in my opinion.

Hi Cliff. Yes the filming on Federal land is upsetting. I wanted to thank you. I noticed that you subscribed to our channel a few days ago. Chris and I have been watching you long before we had a channel and are struggling on YouTube, and frankly personally and really appreciate your support. I, personally, don’t like shorts. I’ve done a few and it hasn’t helped us much. I might do them occasionally but for me it hasn’t worked much. The shorts do get some subscribers but they don’t seem to turn into viewers. I don’t know, still learning. Take care friend 🤗
I prefer the longer videos over the Yahoo shorts. Hoping this National Park filming bit gets overturned, I can totally understand for a major filming crew, but for the Youtubers, it makes no sense.
I personally don't like the shorts. If I were you I would highlight your episodes on the shorts with the most appealing video clips. This may drawl more attention to your channel for those of us who aren't familiar with what you're about.
As a YouTube creator, you have to do what is best for your channel. That being said, I don't watch shorts. In fact, when they appear on my subscriptions page, I click the three dots to the left of the title and then click "hide". Problem solved Some of the channels I subscribe to may post 3 or 4 shorts for each regular video. This floods my page with 30 second videos…I just say "no" to shorts.
As a new YouTuber it seems I can only get views with shorts, I can't seem to get any interest in longer videos it's kind of frustrating.
Youtube short and ticktock are for idiots, it's a crazy idea for modern people with short attention span (everyonejust wants fast poorly made stuff these days). You may get some new subscribers but they will soon get bored and move on to the next silly crazy. In the long term sorts will have a negative affect on your channel.
Spent 15min there today today nothing but fake pranks fake news, IN SHORT FAKE GARBAGE IS PUSHED IN YOUR FAKE INTERESTING CHANNELS ARE JUST PUSHED TO THE BACK.
Please don't put to much shorts in, I've had some channel I've subscribed to throw out out more shorts than videos and as someone that likes to spend time and learn some new information, having that silly vertical picture on my TV just makes me unsubscribe.
On the matter of the parks, its simply summer is coming, people just need to stop visiting in there thousands, as soon as those greedy fat cats loose money they will change their minds.
Cliff, if you must start using YouTube Shorts, I suggest that you consider only using them to inform potential and/or current viewers of "Previews of Coming Attractions" on your Youtube channel. This way, you can share a brief synopsis of the upcoming video (to include its title and plot) that you will be uploading to your YouTube channel, along with the date and time, etc. You can also use Shorts to share pertinent information applicable to your channel, such as upcoming events, merch, meetups, important reminders, etc.

I enjoy all your videos and have learned so much from watching. Thanks for the discussion about filming permits. You are so right about promotion. It would be foolish for the National Parks to discourage all the free promotion they get from you tubers like you. Keep up the great work you are doing.
Keep doing the research on the laws. I agree with you and it is a pain. The more you know the better off you are.
I like short videos, but I don't watch shorts. I don't want to support an unnecessary trend. I also don't really like vertical phone videos. It's your channel though so do whatever you want. I will still keep watching the videos that appeal to me.

Hey Cliff! Man, now I'm raging about the NPS again… Thanks for the mention. We are headed to Teton, Yellowstone, Glacier, and Banff this summer. You can film, but not upload. So I'm still going to make videos, but I'll archive them until it's safe to make them public. Except for Banff, since Canada is cool, lol. I wouldn't worry about the AT, except for the sections in Shenandoah and the Smokies, probably.
Shorts have worked out well for me. I use them mostly as teasers/previews for my long-form videos. I can see in my analytics that they have helped to boost views, watch time, and subscribers.
In a sense paying to film on national land is analogous to "The government takes your cow and now sells you it's milk."
Not everyone wants a camera pointed in their face or be forced to deal with a thousand youtubers running around a National Park. A National Park is sacred. Keep it that way
Films being filmed in the national parks help advertise their parks. I think that they will be hurting themselves. It seems like another way to take money from people's pockets. Very greedy.

Cliff that's horrible about the filming permit and I hope the rule gets reversed.
I'm no fan of shorts or verticals, but if they help, go for it. I'm handicapped in two ways, financially and physically, therefore I'll never get to see the National Parks if the filming permit law stays in place, except by some TV documentary that usually sucks. We are losing the Freedom that so many have died for in the past!

Wondering Woodsman who loves to share the history of the land from which he wonders. I have a suggestion for your dilemma about filming permits. Why don't you just go and file for a state historical documentary license, this license should cover not only filming in state parks but all the historical sites. Hope this info helps you.
Yes Cliff the government needs to stay out of our private lives the national parks belong to the people. My family lost our cabin and over 6 acres of land back in the early 1980’s for the corridor for the Appalation Trail never understood why they needed all that land when the trail just crossed close to our land. The worst part is they tore the cabin down when it could have been used for shelter for hikers. We just keep losing our rights one at a time soon they will all be gone. My wife and I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
