MAGNUS v. FABIANO! Who Wins Without Opening Prep? Freestyle Chess Game 1

Two of the best players in the world, Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, will face each other in a two-game match in the Chess960 variant (Freestyle chess). The time control is 90 minutes for the entire game, with a 30-second increment per move… Earlier this year, Carlsen won the inaugural Freestyle GOAT Chess Challenge against Caruana himself. Can he repeat the feat to win the match in Singapore?

  1. You cut to an interview with Magnus's girlfriend in the final seconds of this game!?!? And then we miss the final move for that? That is like switching the channel before the tie breaking goal in an overtime game. What the hell were the commentators thinking???? Just look at the bloody comments in the live chat of people asking to see the game! You know, the thing we actually came to watch?

  2. Ashley is being ridiculously condescending and combative for a second day in a row. He did the same at the St Louis Chess Club with Magnus. He's ruining the whole broadcast and event.

  3. "How will they play, vomiting over the port railing from sea-sickness? Welcome to Freestyle Chess on a yacht!"

    😆 This could be fun.

That woman is supposed to be having a conversation with the black gentleman. She repeatedly makes him feel like he's talking to himself.

  4. Tania is terrific as a chess reporter and personality and doing interviews and segments throughout a broadcast. Being a main broadcaster throughout the entirety of the game I would say is a choice that surprised me a little bit. Happy for her success tho.

  5. Glad the comments warned me that the live board would generally be small (a problem we all hollered about recently during Anna's Levy/Pia broadcast) and that the commentary and frivolous interviews would overshadow important parts of the game. Now I know not to bother watching. Event organizers in chess really need to figure out that, just because audiences want some lively energy to keep us engaged, that doesn't mean it should ever come at the expense of THE CHESS ITSELF

  6. The freestyle 960 concept is a great one, and the chess played was awesome (thank you Magnus and Fabi!) I do hope that some of the snazzy glitz of this tour does not take away from the appreciation of the challenge of the game. My suggestion would be to approach the rest of the tour with a fun, but somewhat toned down, perhaps more humble, ambassadorship of a game concept that I do hope takes off.

  7. Despite the good idea, the whole thing was ment to selfpromote I am having an impression. I mean, Fischer chess, and now, the name is secondary because somebody went for a freestyle label.
    Seriously.
Not to mention those cut scenes with interviews in the crucial points of the play. Commentators, too loud, too agressive, generally mess. From time to time I was confused we were having the real time chessboard on the screen either. That pulse measuring brings the feeling of the big brother show. Geez, if that is going to be the final form, I will hate it.
