Exploring “Lycidas” by John Milton 🌿
Background: Written in 1637, “Lycidas” is a pastoral elegy composed in memory of Milton’s friend Edward King, who drowned in a shipwreck. The poem reflects themes of grief, loss, and the transience of life.
Form and Structure: The poem consists of 193 lines and is written in a mix of rhyme and blank verse. It employs various classical forms and literary techniques, including allusions to Greek and Roman mythology.
Pastoral Elegy: “Lycidas” is one of the earliest examples of the pastoral elegy in English literature, combining elements of both pastoral poetry and elegy to mourn the loss of a loved one.
