NASA is planning its first return to the moon in over 50 years, but this time they aim to stay. Inspired by past visions of lunar domes, NASA’s Artemis missions will create a permanent moon base by 2030. They will use the powerful SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft to send astronauts to a lunar Gateway, a space station orbiting the moon. From there, a “space taxi” will transport them to the moon’s surface. The base will be built at the moon’s South Pole, chosen for its water ice and constant sunlight. This ambitious project will pave the way for future Mars missions and inspire new generations of explorers.
