After being diagnosed with stage four cancer in 2018, then 24-year-old Luke Grenfell-Shaw couldn’t believe what was happening to him but soon decided to tackle the disease head-on and start his journey to recovery. The young British man also set out on another journey: cycling on a tandem from his native Bristol to #Beijing through nearly 30 countries and raising money for charity. The Hub with Wang Guan looks at the 30,000 km Bristol2Beijing odyssey along the route of the Silk Road, and how Luke overcame the challenges along the way – weather, altitude and other minor ailments – and managed to beat the odds. Luke couldn’t make it to Beijing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but is adamant about making it to China’s capital city where he will finally be able to taste “jianbing” (a Chinese-style pancake). “I call myself a can liver, in contrast with the phrase cancer survivor,” he tells Wang Guan. “You can live with cancer and achieve your dreams.”
