In 4ABY the imperial logistics network was already under immense pressure, but then Emperor Palpatine died. This would set off a chain reaction that would make that bought the Imperial Navy onto its knees.

  2. I'm curious about why you talk so much about military logistics and real-life politics. Do you have some kind of career or background in those things, or are you a layman who does a lot of research?

  3. If you get your kicks out of a video like this, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the YouTube channel PERUN.

His channel is centrally based on videos looking at Defense Economics and how it affects real world things. Plus videos specifically looking at this aspect for countries like the US, China, South Korea, Japan, France, Turkey, and most recently… Israel.

  4. real life equivalent – the mighty Soviet Union didnt get to fight the great battle , the rush across the Fulda Gap that it always prepared to fight . It lost instead in the war of production – United States were outproducing the Soviet Union by every metrics of measurement , with Soviet productivity dropping below zero by the early 1980s . If it had its Endor it may have gone down in a blaze of glory , instead it got cut down by a thousand cuts – Afghanistan , Chernobyl , Berlin

  5. Another thing to consider on the ISD front is that (nominally) they are supposed to be able to operate autonomously for a maximum of 2 years, at least as far as projections of the onboard consumables go. So, food, fuel, water, spare parts, and atmosphere recycling are only able to sustain 2 years of "normal" operation, not attrition warfare.
Being able to regularly top off and refresh without ever needing to tap and drain the projected consumables limitations probably left the Empire's ISD crews feeling a bit spoiled and complacent.

  6. there's more hardpoints on a star destroyer so it takes longer to blow up and can take countless rebel ships down with it. but it also takes longer to construct and costs more resources. it's not like it's entirely devoid of functionality, it's just that the changing metagame wont let it be relevant currently. it will become a cult classic in time.

  7. That was part of what the Death Star was designed for. With docking bays big enough to park the Mark 2 Imperial Star Destroyer inside of it was far easier to restock and repair the ship while it was inside an air filled docking bay. That and it provided facilities for the crew to relax and refresh themselves and extensive medical facilities for the injured while the ship was docked there.

The fact that it had docking bays to park a Mark 2 in it also had bays big enough to park large supply ships in as well.

And it was capable of propelling itself and flying through hyperspace so it could go to where ever they had a fleet that needed re-provisioning or whatever hot spot was active at the time to support whatever fleet was there.

And it had a kick-ass weapon that could blast through any shield and blow up planets.

  8. The thing that always irritated me about ISD art is that the main guns are on the dorsal hull, but artistic depictions of heavy planetary bombardments almost always show the ship sitting belly-in towards the planet, with turbolaser fire coming out of the belly and hitting the planet. Not that an ISD couldn't wreck whole cities with just its ventral guns, but they are not the heaviest. A true max yield bombardment should have the ship either nose-in towards the planet, or dorsal side in (making it look "upside down" if you have the planet at the bottom of the frame and the ship above it) enabling the octuple barbettes to rain fire on the surface.

  9. Just based on external on screen things imperial tech is highly logistics heavy. TIE pilots need a ladder to get in and out. ISDs cannot land on a planet's surface (Mon cala cruisers can't either, but they weren't the main rebel capital ship by numbers). Stormtrooper helmets contain sensitive electronics. The AT-AT requires an escort at all times because it has no rear facing weapons. This was all by design to absolutely kill individualism and force cooperation. Can't have troops getting creative, they'll start to think, then question, and maybe defect. It made the Imperial army and navy very efficient and loyal but at the cost of logistical convenience.

  10. With due respect to OP, his assesment of 7th Fleet as reserve fleet is flawed. 7th Fleet was what we would call Rapid Deployment Expeditionary Force. To quickly get to trouble spot from what ever fwd base it is homeported in.

  11. When I was deployed to Iraq, the Al Asad air base chow hall had one day a WEEK where they served crab legs and lobster tails and another day each week where they served steak. No, I'm not kidding. US military logistics may not have been responsible so much as the large number of senior officers stationed at that base, but it did wonders for my morale.

  12. It makes me wonder if a Lucrehulk or a ship designed like it could have worked. Have it set-up so the ISD flies into the missing wedge of the donut and then can load/un-load from both sides of the ship.

They could carry alot. smaller support ships could land within. class 2 drive means it could keep up as a forward repair/supply base. heavy armor and weapons would mean less ships needed to be kept as fire support, plus the droid fighters it did have.
Parts request list sent before the ISD arrives so they can be waiting when it docks. replacement outer parts taken outside the big doors and moved to the closest hard point before docking so less to move.

Plus being a ship it can move off and get resupplied when needed.

  13. Personaly if i were to build my own fleet i would make small dreadnoughts that have multi purpose methods from carriers to destroyers. Similaf to the sith empires, except have up to date technology and utalise drone units for fighters and bombers.
